1) In terms of stability of less prone to errors,
am i right to say that Verbatim 4x DVD R - followed by DVD r+ is the best media to use for both data and video ( as compared to RAM or DVD RW ) .Say Taiyo yuden is not available .
a) .ram would be ranked 2nd , and RW last choice ?
2) I never wrote any DVDs in my life ..should I now write in + or - .format ...
3)If I can afford DVD RAM , are there any known error issues in DVD RAM at 3x compared to DVD R 8X + or –
a) for DVD RAM , it would be panasonic
b) and DVD RW+. R - , it would be also verbatim ??

If you're asking whether to go DVDR or DVD-RAM way, that depends on your application. DVDR are better for video and less expensive. For flexible storage needs you'd rather use DVD-RAM, especially if it's for your business or if you have a lot of money.
It's a bad idea asking whether the "plus" format is better than "dash" ("minus") format or vice versa. This will only cause endless flamewars since apparently both formats are pretty good. In my opinion, if you have a choice of buying a single format burner or more expensive dual format one, you won't get any extra value by spending more on dual format. Of course, you can also purchase even more expensive burner that supports DVD-RAM as well.
As for DVDR brands, you really can't rely on what it says on the box. For example, I have Verbatim some DVD+Rs made by Ricoh even though some other of their blanks are indeed made by Matsushita (Verbatim's owner). Especially with DVD-R, sometimes you just have to take a risk and buy the media, which can be made by any company unrelated to the brand and possibly have a very low quality.
Good place to help you get started is www.dvdrhelp.com.

It appears that DVD R + is more commonly used than DVD R - . maybe due to lesser errors ?
2) I don;t I can get hold of taiyo yuden, looks like verbatim is the 2nd best bet
3) It appears that DVD R is much more stable than DVD RW

The deal is that DVD-R have been around a bit longer, and you can find very cheap 1x speed blanks. Supposedly, any CD-R manufacturing facility could easily switch to making DVD-R, and as a result there is a lot of poor quality media on the market. On the other hand, manufacturing DVD+R requires different equipment, so only few large companies make them (Verbatim, Ricoh, Maxell). Therefore, there is less chance to come across bad media. However, both formats provide equally good results on quality media.
DVD+/-R have better compatibility with standalone players that DVD+/-RW. I don't think there is any difference in stability.

Thanks
1) I would certainly also think that DVD RAM by panasonic is the way to go for reliability ( if I can afford ) to back up data vs the DVD RW ....
2) any idea what is a good brand of enclosure to buy for DVD writer Drive to make it external , which enclosure has oxford 911 chip apart from BYTECC
3) I have gathered that the firwire trasnfer from enclosure to PC is much reliable than USB 2.0 ..May I know which brand of PCMCIC type 2 card for firewire would you recommend

I'm not a big fan of the external drives, maybe someone else here could help you out on this. I see you already started another thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=478517) on this anyway.

If I look into local shops, I see
verbatim 4x -r: 1,65 euro
verbatim 4x +r: 1,65 euro
...
The very cheap dvd-r are often of poor quality, might fail to burn or might fail to read back after some time.
It appears that DVD R + is more commonly used than DVD R - . maybe due to lesser errors ? Princo does not yet make dvd+ discs, but other crap disc manufacturers (like CMC) have started to...
