for a dvd writer say LG 4082 on an external enclosure attached to a notebook

for a 5 Gb video file written by a DVD writer

1) how much more is USB 1.1 more prone to error /stability issues as compared
to USb 2.0 or firewire

2) wouls you say that USB 1.1 is just aabout 10% slower than USB2.0 and fire
wire when writing a 5 Gb file .

3) Is firewire the most stable in terms of least errors as compared to USB 1.1
and USB 2.0

4) is a pentium 3 machine 1.2 GHZ with 256 Mb PC 133 Ram pose any writing or
any probelems in writing a 5gb file on a DVD

USB 1.1 will only transfer 1MB/s.

So basically, you wont even reach 1x DVD speed when burning. You'll be using the drives 'BURN Proof' technology the entire time.

So basically, forget USB 1.1!

I'm pretty sure USB 2.0 can handle 40MB/s (Making it 40x faster than 1.1). Firewire is about the same - but dont quote me on that ;)

It doesnt matter what PC you have, you'll never fit 5GB on a dvd - well, not until the double layer discs are released! 4.37GB is the max you'll get. Other than that little issue, your pc specs should be fine.

1) Since you mention that at 1.1, we will be using burn proof techno , it looks like USB 1.1 is much more prone to error /stability issues as compared to USb 2.0 or firewire

2) Is firewire the most stable in terms of least errors as compared to USB 2.0

3) I have 2 options , which will give me less errors ?

a) USB 2.0 Enclosure to notebook with USB 2.0 PCMCIA card on notebook

b) USB 2.0 & firewire Enclosure to notebook with FIREWIRE PCMCIA card on notebook

You'll be using the drives 'BURN Proof' technology the entire time.Only if you burn CDs.

DVD- is using ZeroLink, DVD+ is using Lossless Linking ;)

Yeah, I just bought a NEC external, am wondering the same thing.

But I don't have a laptop or a PC, so I dont know where I can hook it up.

From personal experience I can say USB 1.1 is indeed horrible...it is likely to induce "burner rage" :/

is it a fair statment to say that USB 2.0 and firwire of transfer between enclosure ( DVD writer) to notebook is as equally prone to errors/stability issues

I believe both firewire and USB (either version) have error correction mechanisms built in. You shouldn't really have an issue with errors on either interface, excepting that high error rates will slow data transfer rates (because correcting the errors requires bandwidth). In either case, bandwidth is so high and typical error rates are so low that you probably won't notice.

Stability is a lot harder to address. Firewire is older, but USB has a lot more market penetration (every PC comes with USB these days), so it's difficult to say which is more mature. Firewire was designed for high bandwidth applications; it's made for connecting high speed devices. USB (especially 1.1) was really designed to be a shared bus for several low-to-medium speed devices, but (2.0) has seen a lot of success with high speed devices as well.

In the end, I think you could really flip a coin.

depends on your notebook really, what i discovered in my config is
that usb2 is actually a lot slower than firewire (for unknown reasons), when testing external enclosure/hd. (and yes, it is notebook to blame, since the same enclosure on another machine will get full usb2 speeds...) Luckily the enclosure is usb2/firewire combo, so i just spend
some additional $ on cabling.

I've been using an external firewire DVD writer for some time now and would highly recomend it.

Do PC have firewire? Been so long i havent used a pc.

Btw. you could always get a fire/usb combo.. thats what i got.

USB 1.1 = 11mbits/sec (1.4mbytes/sec)
USB 2.0 = 480mbits/sec (60mbytes/sec)
Firewire = 400mbits/sec (50mbyts/sec)

1x DVD = 11mbits/sec (1.385mbytse/sec)
4x DVD = 44mbits/sec (5.54mbytes/sec)

USB 1.1 can BARELY handle a 1x dvd burner. I would suggest firewire. I'm not even so sure they make many burners that are usb 1.1.
