K first this post has nothing to do with MPEGEncoding or so. But this Game is so amazing SO I MUST tell You.
Some guys from Austria started to code a new game called .kkrieger.
It is about a guy who have troubles with some aliens.
The game is coded in Visual C++ and x86 Assembler. The best thing is:
-it is freeware
-it is only 96k big
-it will kill doom3
You don't believe me? Here is the link to my new page: AMGames (http://rj-elektronik.de/avideo/AMGames.php).
...and here the Projectpage: theprodukkt (http://www.theprodukkt.com/)
Have fun with it! :D ... I have!
P.S. these are the system requirements:
- A 1.5GHz Pentium3/Athlon or faster.
- 512MB of RAM (or more)
- A Geforce4Ti (or higher) or ATI Radeon8500 (or higher) graphics card
supporting pixel shaders 1.3, preferably with 128MB or more of VRAM.
- Some kind of sound hardware
- DirectX 9.0b

LOL, someone finally made a combination from the demo scene programming techniques and gaming :)
however 2 things:
1. it doesn't have reverse mouse-Y control (that terribly mess my play)
2. it's terribly slow on my machine (2-5 fps). maybe i should reduce the desktop resolution before running it again.
other than these, prety cool :)

On my machine (AMD 2800+; Epox 8KRA2+; 785 DDR 2.5; 2x80 Maxtor SATA; MSI GF5 5700 Ultra 128 DDRII; WinXP) it works like a charm.
Maybe they fix the requirements in the final. I played the game in 5 Min throu the end. So it is a short game. :D ...till now! It is still beta... What I found out:
The planed a trilogy.
These are the controls of the game till now:
W - forward
S - backward
A - left
D - right
[Space] - Jump
Left mouse - shoot
1-5 - switch weapon
Nice to see the textures. Still wondering in which way the coded it to get THIS amazing size...

Doesn't seem to work with my Radeon 7500, too bad :( :(
That owned! But it seems I'll have to get a hardware upgrade, Athlon 2500+ with Radeon 9800 Pro didn't really like all that detail *too* well. Get the inverse mouse fixed though! I feel like I'm drunk playing it without inverse mouse.

ah! good news travels fast. my geeky (but not as geeky as me) friend showed me this just yesterday. slow as a newt wading through treacle, but 96k is goddamn amazing.
generative textures, l-system levels and characters and a super-tight engine i guess.
[edit]
okay, just downloaded it... it's 98k! dammit, there's 1 selling point gone. 96 i can handle, but 98 is just HUGE :)

Screen shots are amazing......(I cannot test bcoz no GeForce4 Ti)
And it feels difficult to swallow, a game can be in 96KB.

And it feels difficult to swallow, a game can be in 96KB. well, you should have played head ovel heels (spectrum, comodor iirc too) to see what they could do those days with 32/48k ram :)
@Mug Funky: they state that if you calc K=1024 then it IS 96K ;)
btw, it's 'decompressing' about a 30-40 secs (didn't measure) on my machine. they say they just keep 'source' of the designer work, and kinda compile it when u launch the exe to get all the 3d models to be used during the game. as i said, a game with 'demo' programming techniques ;)
@mf, drunk, yup, that's how i feel too without inverse mouse ;)
here's a quote from their page (http://rj-elektronik.de/avideo/KKRIEGER.php)- We do .not. have some kind of magical data compression machine that is able to squeeze
hundreds of megabytes of mesh/texture and sound data into 96k. We merely store the
individual steps employed by the artists to produce their textures and meshes, in a very
compact way. This allows us to get .much. higher data density than is achievable with
normal data compression techniques, at some expense in artistic freedom and loading times.

It runs a little sluggish on my Athlon 2100+/Radeon 9800 Pro. Not to bad though. There are a few amazing things. In the room with the pillar that is rotating on the ceiling, look as the dents in it and how the light reacts with it. Amazing.

hehe. yeah, i realised the 98k was the compressed download, and the exe was 96k. i forgot about the help file.
i can't play the game here - p3 733, geforce 2 Mx400. not high-end by any stretch of the imagination.
i have seen it playing though... it's very impressive that they've achieved that kind of flexibility with generative levels/textures.
i've seen some cool stuff with l-systems (the brain-ride intro to fight club was "grown" in softimage using l-systems, and is a fairly accurate representation of a real brain), but nothing with the flexibility to make textures and models the way the artist wants (with some concessions of course, but no more than a regular fractal-texture proggy)

It runs reasonably well on my Athlon2500+@3200+ with Radeon 9800 pro, but Far Cry runs better :p . I never got far in the game, cause sooner or later i get stuck in a pillar or somethng.

Runs pretty damn good on my P4 3.0Ghz... dual channel DDR 512MB... ATI AIW 9600 128MB computer.
Overall easy demo. Though it is a bit linear... but great for such a small file size in a world of 1GB plus installs for single games.

Thanks for the link Amnon82, nice little simple game that with gorgeous effects (seemed to run absolutely fine on my radeon 9500pro/ AMD 1800XP), shame they dont release the source or more info about how its created...

...if you want some more....breakpoint 2004 ended few days ago
http://www.scene.org/
...here are the results
http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=/parties/2004/breakpoint04/results.txt
..and here the result for the 96kb games contest
96k Game
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
334 .kkrieger - .theprodukkt
297 B-Clopd 3D - Adventures in Plattformworld - John Trapolka Memorial Krew &
Creative Mind
172 Raptor in Javascript - Tycoon
86 Cubes 50k - Red/Razor1911
38 No Moles! - T$
24 Barcade - Jiri
...and hey...amiga kicks pc ass again ;)
Ah! You know, turning off antialiasing (though .kkrieger ignores antialiasing and displays it all jagged anyway) helps a lot in performance. I actually finished the game this time :). Really cool architecture - there may be some taken away freedom by this generative stuff, but it sure as hell looks original :). If they actually ignored the 96k stuff, and, say, went for a 1.44MB game, they could've actually made it a more worthy game, with opponents dying and sound effects not sounding really crappy. And, perhaps, some real physics ;).

With P-IV 2.8 and a 9700pro AIW it runs fine. Check directx (at least 9)

kkrieger does beat all the other games easily...but it is worth seeing what others did at the same event:

very true. i've got most of the 64K fr-xx. 8, 19 and 30 are really cool.

kkrieger has the most impressive graphics, but I would say that B-Clopd 3D - Adventures in Plattformworld is the most impressive game. Killed all of the dogs before discovering the right mouse button kicks....

Here again the Controls out of the manual:
2. controls
-----------
W - forward
S - backward
A - left
D - right
[Space] - Jump
Left mouse - shoot
1-5 - switch weapon
Press M1 - M9 to respawn at the different respawn points (also helps when caught in collision ;)
M1-M9 for respawn. I played this game to the end. ...to continued...
Nice architecture, grafix, textures. K, the KI is stupied, but for this game in this size ok. I hope a final will come out soon.
On the project-page they told of a trilogie... :D
