Which drive do you prefer?
I've read reviews of them all, and really can't make which one is the top of them.
Thanks!

I expect you'd be looking at the LiteOn 812s now, not the 811.
That said, I'd still go for the NEC over the others I think. Although I've got all the drives you mention, it's the NEC I use for any burns I make.
For the money, you cant really go wrong with it.

considering the test result of the 811s at 8x, the Nec seems to be your best shot at the moment.. it's one of the few burners to burn more than a single brand reliably at 8x. And the price is also right.
P.S. I have an 811 myself.. first 8x affordable 8x burner that could be made regionfree, so I just couldn't resist.

I also vote for NEC: It's write quality is pretty good, even with 8x on 4x media (which the Pioneer can't do at all!), and it is pretty cheap. The Pioneer doesn't seem to be bad, but it is more expesive without being able to do more.

Sorry to disagree somewhat, but my Pioneer 107 consistently burns at 8x with el-cheapo 1-4x rated media ("Integrity" brand). Quality is great, no coasters except early on, caused by incorrect Nero settings.

Try to read such crap discs in a toshiba 1612/1712 with unlocked speed and you'll see how badly the discs are burned (of course, you can't blame the drive, but only the users who installs a hacked firmware and then uses it on crap discs...)

I've been very pleased with the performance of my NEC 1300a except for the long time it takes to be "ready" after inserting a DVD - up to 55 seconds for a DVD-R (newest firmware)
Can anyone say if that has improved with the newer 2500 ?
How long do the others take ?
thanks

"Try to read such crap discs in a toshiba 1612/1712...."
All I can say is I can play 1-4x crappo media, burned at 8x with my Pioneer 107 on my standalone NEC NDV23 with perfect results. That's good enough for me. Maybe your Toshiba's not too hot?

Came across this thread while shopping for new burner. Was looking specicfically at LiteOn 812S and NEC 2500a.
Anyone considering these two should check out these two reviews I just read. The LiteOn 812S (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/141) review compares 812S with NEC 2500a (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/134) directly whereas the older 2500a review compares to the 411S which was what was the LiteOn drive of the time. This older review of the NEC 2500a has all the specific info and conlusions about that drive.
FWIW - I chose the NEC 2500a just becuase I wanted a DVD burner with excellent write quality (which this supposedly has). DVD reading and CD burning I have covered with other drives in my PC.
Cheers...
In answer to my own post 4 posts up, yes the NEC2500a takes half the time the NEC1300a takes to be "ready" with a new Disc.
Great drives - both of them!
cheers
