ATI allinwonder 9600 pro VS pinnacle studio pc-tv pro

iam trying to put together a computer for a friend with some analog capturing abilities, mostly his material is on vhs or video8, he has no deck with s-video output, so iam looking mostly for the card with good composite in...., the card should be capable of pal/d1 resolution input without any quirks with the software of my choice into huffyuv and/or mjpeg.

the question: comments on the two cards? good, bad, ugly? :D

There is just no comparision........ATI 9000 or 9600. With a VDF to WDM wrapper, you can use any capture software you want, any codec you want.

I say go with the ATI card. I have a Pinnacle PCTV card and have had nothing but problems with it. I couldn't even get the Pinnacle drivers to recognize their own card! And as for tech support, Pinnacle has to be the worst.

BTW - I did finally get the card working using the sourceforge btwincap drivers and I get decent results with s-video input.

I have been using my AIW 9600 since December and haven't had a single hickup or problem out of it. It's been the best AIW card I've owned! I got a free Half Life 2 certificate in the box with mine...IF IT WILL EVER COME OUT! :D

I truly feel like out in left field hearing about all the wonderful things rfmmars and others are doing with their AIWs. I have removed a Studio Plus card because it caused trouble with a AIW9200 I bought and installed.

About this 9200; I have tried to get away from getting a green screen while recording but to no avail. The patch in Doom9 did not do it. I am unable to bring my old VHS movies to my HDD for processing.

I found a couple of places in europe that offer a patch suposedly specific for this card, but I am unwilling to send money that far away. Just about ready to take this aberration of a card and run over it with my truck.

Toughts anyone?

Thank you. I am going to go back, dig up information and either build or buy a box to twart this offending blips from the vertical scans. :sly:

Jesus, I know exactly what you mean. I found that a time base corrector will fix those blips. But it's much easier and cheaper just to buy a TV Wonder VE ($30 US)! Both my AIW 9600 and TV Wonder sit in the same PC, and they don't conflict at all.

it is also a matter of luck. Depends on your general pc configuration whether your tv card will install without problems or turn your next week into a hell.
Browse through the manufactures forums and see for yourself which card you have most faith.
Pinnacle cards are good, but i have noticed that some of their drivers are not WDM, that means their cards cannot be used with 3 party software. I am not sure with latest releases.
Another nice piece of software is Chris-TV. My MSI tv card was unusable before until i switched to Chris-TV.
