View Full Version : Taking CD tracks and converting to 5.1 audio

Ok here is what Im trying to do. I have alot of sound track type cds that I want to take and encode the tracks to be 5.1. I want these to be kept on my pc mostly and a format that can be played on the pc, since my surround speakers are on it. Now Ive looked through the lengthy stereo to 5.1 thread and frankly it got me rather overwelhmed since im not up on audio encoding as much as other things. What Id like to know, is there a simpler way that i can just take a track, feed it into a program and it gives me the wav files i need or even straight to a 5.1 track? I tried out the method in the thread and i didnt quite get it to work, maybe there are other updated guides or plugins to make the process easier. Also, what format should i shoot for? AC3? ACC? OGG? I heard acc and ogg support 5.1, but are they as good as say ac3 for quality, are they easier to get to then ac3? Once i cna get one track done i can go form there, its just getting the first one done. What do you guys think?

I developed a batch file a while back for simple upmixing meant mainly for 5.1 playback purposes - if this is what you're looking for check out this post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=408560#post408560). I haven't updated it in a while but grab the latest besweet and you should be good to go.

oh ok, thanks alot. one thing though. what is the best bitrate for ac3? what i mean is, what bitrate will give me peak quality? im sure at some point the bitrate will start to show dimenising returns. What would be a good hq ? Thanks

im having a problem using your program, it keeps saying it cant find sox.exe, but i have it pointing to the right place in the settings file

The max allowed bitrate for AC3 is 640 kbps, common high-quality 5.1 values are 448 or 384. Post your .ini file, remember to use directory names with no spaces (i.e. use c:\progra~1\ instead of c:\program files\)

here are my settings
output_wav=false
output_ac3=true
resamplefreq=
reverb=false
preload_audio=0
ac3_bitrate=448
soxdir=g:\sox10dos\sox.exe
bsdir=g:\BeSweetv1.5b26\besweet.exe
one other thing, you said on that other thread that this isnt a good way to go to ac3 and that for good quality you should output to wavs and use another encoder. is that what you would recommend here? Thanks for your help.
KpeX

That statement applies mostly to archival purposes, and that's simply because AC3enc shouldn't be used for anything archival, it's an experimental encoder. I use it quite frequently for converting 2 channel material for SPDIF playback, and I highly recommend it for that. I have no quality problems with the encoder on my system.
Your ini file does not need exe names, it should look like this:
output_wav=false
output_ac3=true
resamplefreq=
reverb=false
preload_audio=0
ac3_bitrate=448
soxdir=g:\sox10dos
bsdir=g:\BeSweetv1.5b26

well ok i did that and it seemed to work, but now im not getting any output
here is what i type in run:
G:\UpmiXv0.6\Encode.bat ''g:\Bolero(wav).wav'' ''g:\Bolero(surround).ac3''
am i doing something wrong? whne i hit enter i see some dos screens with besweet flash up then close, then a dos screen with sox.exe sits there, nothing on the blakc screen, just a blinking cursor, for a few minutes then it closes, but no output. what am i forgetting?

Hi,
Note that v. 0.7 is out in the (long) upmix thread. Please post your settings.ini file and the logfile (should be EncodeAC3.log in the UpmiX directory.)

Does this occur with any other wavs? It appears that it is a source problem.
trooper11
19th April 2004, 03:32
well i only tried one wav, but why would it be the source? the wav plays fine on its own...

Please do try with another source.
trooper11
19th April 2004, 04:45
well what does that mean? isnt that creating a temp audio file? what does it have to do with the source?
KpeX

Try renaming the source wave file to a name that does not contain parenthesis. If this does not work, please upload a sample of the .wav somewhere.

19th April 2004, 04:59
hmm ok i tried another track and got the same thing using this run line:
G:\UpmiXv0.7\Encode.bat ''g:\Toshio Masuda - Parting.wav'' ''g:\UpmiXv0.7\Toshio Masuda - Parting.ac3''
i dont know what it could be. you think its the wav i made? I made it using dbpoweramp from a cd track. does the wav your program accept have to have certain properties? mine was 48khz, 16bit @187 kb/s.

i can pm you some ftp info and you can get it from there, would that be ok?
trooper11

do you want to get the wav im working with and see if you can see where the problem is?
KpeX
19th April 2004, 21:23
The specs of your wav should work fine. Edit: I think I know the problem. Wait a few hours while I formulate a solution. A temporary solution is to rename the wav file to a name with no spaces.
trooper11
19th April 2004, 21:49
oh ok well see i tried that.
i changed the filename and my run command looked like this:
G:\UpmiXv0.7\Encode.bat ''g:\ Parting.wav'' ''g:\UpmiXv0.7\ Parting.ac3''
still same problem

Somehow, the audio is being detected as a non-wav extension, when it has a .wav extension. Also, try using batchenc.bat for a simpler encoding process - simply copy the wav file into the upmix directory and double-click batchenc.bat.

ok well i tried the command line you gave it still didnt work, but the batch method seemed to do more.
i did as you said and moved the wav to the upmix folder then clicked the batchenc file and then besweet went to work transcoding, only the output was a .wav file again, just smaller, about 15mb. what do i need to do to get it to output .ac3?

Logging ends : 04/19/04 , 19:22:49. Very, very strange. The process failed at the AC3 encoding step, everything up to that worked. When I tested the wav you sent me, my commandline looked exactly like this (except for directories) and the conversion was flawless. Unfortunately, I have no explanation for why it failed. I suggest you test other AC3 encoding, i.e. try transcoding AC3>AC3 with BeSweet and see if Ac3enc ever works for you.

20th April 2004, 04:29
lol well i wish i could but i dont have any ac3 tracks to try...
so you dont have any ideas as what could be causing that? is it besweet that actaully causes the failure?
KpeX

Yes, BeSweet is crashing on the six mono wav > AC3 conversion. The only place I have seen this error before is with erroneous command lines, but there is nothing flawed about the command line given.

Well, you could output to wav and convert to AC3 with any other encoder, there's also a sticky in this forum detailing another method.
trooper11
20th April 2004, 20:51
yeah i saw that other method, i tried it first but its pretty complicated that i was hoping i could find somehting simpler. if i just do the wav files, what app do you recommend to go from the wavs to ac3?

@trooper11: I use ac3enc v1.20 from the ffmpeg project. You can use it as a plugin for BeSweet (which is the one you were using earlier I'm afraid), or as part of the FFMPEG project. I have no idea how to get 5.1 to work in FFMPEG. It works fairly well on 2ch.
@KpeX: The version of SoX that is on the website is compiled for DOS. It needs all characters less than 8 characters. You can change all of the names to less than 8 characters and it all seems to work. I have been using cc.wav, fl.wav, fr.wav, etc. for all of the seperate names. It seems to work this way. Were you using a compile for Windows? or the Dos one listed on their website? Thx for this util!!

Yes, I use a windows version. The compile linked on my site should work fine, otherwise use sourceforge.

ok i went to sourceforge and dled the sox-win app and installed it, but now it says it cant find the sox.exe file, here is what my config file says
output_wav=false
output_ac3=true
output_aac=false
output_vorbis=false
vorbis_quality=.35
normval=100%
resamplefreq=
reverb=false
preload_audio=0
ac3_bitrate=448
soxdir=g:\sox12174\sox
bsdir=g:\BeSweetv1.5b26
isnt that how it should look?

I'm having the same exact problem with sox from the sourceforge site.
I think the dos version doesn't work.

It does work, it's just that UpmiX requires long filenames, which DOS doesn't support. And apparently the version posted on their website was compiled with a DOS compiler. You have two choices, A) edit the batch file to use less than 8 characters (not reccomended), or B) get a windows compile of sox from here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sox/sox12174.zip).

I've used several versions of sox from around the web and never had long filename problems. Where is this dos compile coming from?
trooper11, if it's not finding sox.exe, it's either not there or you typed something wrong for the direcory. Remember to list the directory only and use directories without spaces. (i.e. if the location is c:\program files\sox.exe, you should specify c:\progra~1 for the soxdir.)

output_wav=false
output_ac3=true
output_aac=false
output_vorbis=false
vorbis_quality=.35
normval=100%
resamplefreq=
reverb=false
preload_audio=0
ac3_bitrate=448
soxdir=g:\sox12174\sox
bsdir=g:\BeSweetv1.5b26
now where is the problem, there are no spaces and that is exactly where the sox app is located. im starting to think this program just doesnt want to work for my pc lol
KpeX

So the full location is c:\sox12174\sox\sox.exe?

bah im an idiot lol, i found that problem
and yes! success, it worked completely and its great. i think the problem was trying to use the dos compiled sox app, when i switched to the sox-win version for windows, it worked fine.

Trooper11: Glad to hear it worked. Would you mind telling me which download link provided you with the bad version of sox? I'd like to warn users about it in the readme.

I don't think I downloaded the dos version. I downloaded the one Lnxpeng gave the link for, and I still get the error message. Trooper11, where did you get the windows compile from.
