non standard encoding

i did a dvd with the following settings using main concept encoder which plays w'out problems:

720:432
16:9 display (or 4:3 and patch later to 16:9)
encode as progressive(!)

does this kind of encoding have advanteges concerning bitrate?? :confused:

You mean you have encode with a res like 720x480?

But what's not standart. If your max bitrate don't go over 9800kbps it is 100% DVD-Konform.;)

the res is not within standard.
only 720x576, 352x576, 352x288 (pal) is within.
my thought is with a res of 720x432 u can lower the encoding bitrate for there are not so many pix.

what machine are you playing back with? i suspect most machines will have difficulties with this size, but you may have got lucky with your own.

of course, this is a moot point if we're considering that (at least with DVD backups) you shouldn't be distributing to other people (and hence their machines).

i know both my standalones fall over when i feed them non-standard VCD and SVCD, but i've no DVD burner, so i couldn't test how those work.
