Wow.. I just signed up to download the latest Oracle J2EE development package (these days it seems to be popular to have a J2EE development environment.. I just downloaded Sun Java Creator a few days ago). Anyway, since thereg once ran a story on Dell's ordering page (long after they set up those hilarious questions about WMD and terrorism - I've had to go through that on every Dell order I've ever made) I thought I'd share what Oracle asks you to agree to:

I am not a citizen, national or resident of, and am not under the control of, the government of: Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Syria, nor any other country to which the United States has prohibited export.
I will not download or otherwise export or re-export the Programs, directly or indirectly, to the above mentioned countries nor to citizens, nationals or residents of those countries.
I am not listed on the United States Department of Treasury lists of Specially Designated Nationals, Specially Designated Terrorists, and Specially Designated Narcotic Traffickers, nor am I listed on the United States Department of Commerce Table of Denial Orders.
I will not download or otherwise export or re-export the Programs, directly or indirectly, to persons on the above mentioned lists.
I will not use the Programs for, and will not allow the Programs to be used for, any purposes prohibited by United States law, including, without limitation, for the development, design, manufacture or production of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons of mass destruction.

Wow.. list of Specially Designated Nationals (with first letters!), I wonder what that is. The Commerce Table of Denial Orders also seems to be interesting. What the heck is a Denial Order or a Specially Designated National?

the real headcases use linux these days... the GPL is so damn permissive, it's like they're ASKING people to bomb the US. i say we boycott the GPL.

well.. you can send 256 bit AES encrypted emails even from Windows and not even the NSA can read it. So the whole point of stuff like this: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/46499 is really to make more people use encryption software - unless they want to completely ban that which most likely won't work since there's freely available solutions and as with DeCSS somebody finally has to admit that the stuff is out there and won't creep back onto a coder's harddisk.

But I'm really wondering what it takes to get on that list. I can understand drug traffickers, terrorists that's already a bit more difficult because certain people call everybody a terrorist these days.. spend more than an hour on a computer a day and you're already a hacker threatening the IT infrastructure and thus an IT terrorist.

i remember there was a clause in the Blurbeta license for Max plugins on ICBMs. the blur studios lawyers decided to put that in there... apparently a raycasting engine could be used in ICBMs. go figure.

I've just removed my last post in this thread. I said something inappropriate about the acting US president, and even though my opinion on Mr. Bush is still the same, it was totally unappropriate of me to make such a statement in this forum, where other people get striked for making political statements themselves (see rule15). I shall strive to set a better example for the future and please do remind me should I get off track again.
