I was wondering if anyone knows what current brand and model DVD+R/RW burners will be supported (by firmware upgrade) to write to the upcoming dual-layered DVD+R discs. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Carlos.

None whose manufacturer wants to sell new burners again and again...also, dvd+r9 media will be a bit pricy (http://www.clubic.com/n/n12215.html) on release

Does this mean that none of the current DVD+R/RW burners are capable of burning to DVD+R9 via firmware upgrade, or that they CAN burn via firmware upgrade, but the manufaturers won't offer the firmware upgrades? If this is true, will there be firmware upgrades made available by 3rd parties? Thanks for any info.

Carlos.

I have been told that the LG 4082B drive is most likely able to write dvd+r9 by hardware, but won't get such an update with 90% certainty for marketing (and sales) reasons...other rumors are that the Nec 2510 (for dvd+r9) will have the same hardware like the nec 2500, but will be sold as a new drive.
If that turns out to be true, "Herrie" will find a way to make the Nec 2500 burn dvd+r9. So this is IMHO the only drive where you could hope to get an inofficial update.

You MIGHT find a drive today that could be firmware upgradable but I would not count on it being very reliable. Look at where we are today with the state of getting stable and quality burns on existing media and technology. It's taken a couple of years for things to settle down. I have no reason to believe it will take at least 12-18 months before the technology (media and drives) stabilizes and the initially high costs come down to a reasonable level.

Meanwhile, if you need DVD burning capability, get what is known today to work well and be happy. Affordable and stable dual DVD burning is a ways off. Hey, you may even wear out the DVD burner by then.
