backup of a live concert > 4 gb ?

hi folks,

i would like to make a backup from a live-rock concert (many details and heavy motion, no noise).

source is dvd-9. i would like to convert with xvid and burn it on dvd-r 5, so i need a video-file with <= 4 gb.

when i use xvid 1.0 rc4, h263 matrix, 808 x 448 pixel resolution + quarter pixel + gmc and (within my avisynth-script) vaguedenoiser (thres=0.5) on high motion scenes, the first pass would become much larger than 4 gb. can xvid handle this case ?? the bitrate calculator can't it.

i'am upset to see, that in case of original quality i can't compress the source material at q2 mode. xvid/mp4 seems not to work with much motion. normally i can compress up to 1 hour of 848x448 material on one single cd at first pass already...

any ideas for this case??

You could try a smaller resolution (or an anamorphic encode if you don't want to lose vertical resolution). The source isn't >720 in width right? There really is no point in creating extra pixels when wanting more quality/lower quants.

A custom quant matrix may also help (maybe something like hvs-better?) though I haven’t done much with lower bit rate matrices.

gmc didn't help, but xvid 2 pass with first pass > 4 gb works !

resolution: 800 x 440, 109 minutes
xvid: h263, quarter pixel, bframes 3/1.5/0.7, b-vop sens 7, adapt. quant, vhq 4, trellis

first pass discarded, according to video.pass 6.2 gb
secon pass: 3,85 gb - error to destination 0.07%

quality is quite good.

freezes within ogg container while seeking, but matroska works.
