AAC Audio in Win2K WMP9

As my first post, I would like to thank the forum sponsors for making doom9 such a comprehensive resource! I have contributed a $10 donation and hope other new arrivals will do likewise.

My question: During my 5 day waiting period, I have taken opportunity to experiment with the tools and guides offered on Doom9 to create XviD and DivX media files. My T-40 laptop running Win XP plays both video and audio, but my wife's Sony VAIO running Win 2K will only play video (no audio) for XviD/AAC encoded files? I have installed other players with the same result (video only) and have also downloaded/installed audio filter packs offered on Doom9 download, but still no audio?!

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Thank you for the pointers, but I still have no joy. I installed both 3ivx and coreaac on the Win 2K machine, re-booted, and still no audio. I've run the XviD/AAC file through "WMP-9", "BS-Player", and "The Core Media Player" none of which will play sound. On the XP platform, WMP-9 properties show both video and audio properties, but on Win-2K, there are no audio properties shown (just a "-").

Any further ideas?

ok first of all what file format do you have? .avi or .mp4 or...?

It's an .avi file. I should point out that DivX/AAC encodes that I've made with FairUse, DrDivX, and AutoGK all play on Win-2K WMP-9. It's only the XviD/AAC encode file that will not play audio on Win-2K, but it plays audio just fine on XP ??

than i very much doubt that you have an aac audio stream in the file...

open the .avi in gspot and report what audio format it displays

If you want to see if your media players can play AAC streams in an MP4 container. Try playing this one (http://82.2.167.24/Uploaded_Files/Doom9_Forum_files/2Ch_AAC-LC@96kbps.zip)!

OK, I downloaded gspot and evaluated the file. The audio codec is shown as: ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc

The video codec is shown as: 4cc - xvid Name - XviD

ac3 is something different than aac

install ac3filter (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ac3filter)

Success! The ac3filter fixed it. Now I can see AND hear the .avi file on Win-2K on any player of choice.

Thanks for the prompt support! Yes, unless you are 100% certain about the types of your source files streams, it's always a good idea to check them before hand.

There's also no harm in having more than one file stream checker.
