need a little more info than that. is is a straight off the DVD rip (a load of VOB files and IFO files), or is it encoded into another form, like divx?

if it's a straight-off the disc rip, there's a fair amount of stuff out there that will help you - try the one-click DVD backup section. i'll suggest ReJig to squish it down to DVD-5 size (DVD-R is 4.7 gigs, but most movies are 8.5Gb) because Nic is very cool.

In Nero, when you start a New Compilation, there is a popup menu that selects whether you are doing a CD compilation, or a DVD compilation. If you click on New Compilation and you don't get the popup menu for CD/DVD, your Nero is too old to do DVD, or it is not detecting your DVD writer.

You need to:

1. Encode your AVI to MPEG-2.

2. Author a DVD.

3. Burn the DVD.

But first of all, you need to read the guides! There is so much you can find there that it would be waste of time explaining it here.

By the way, there are application that can do all the required steps for you at once (e.g. DVDit), but you can't expect much from the outcome in terms of video and menu quality.
