Lame 3.96 has been released. Changelog available here (http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/lame/lame/doc/html/history.html?rev=1.65). Changes include quality improvements in ABR and CBR modes. EXE and DLL available here (http://mitiok.cjb.net/). Speed and quality improvements are numerous, upgrading would be a good idea.

I have d/l'ed and installed (upraded) my lame to 3.96, well the ACM file anyway. :)
My (probably) really dumb question is that I have several programs that use lame_enc.dll as well, these as I understand it usually package the lame_enc.dll with them. (e.g. Cdex, Winamp and Nero).
Is it ok just to copy the new lame_enc.dll into the directories where these programs have installed themselves (and system32) so that they will use the new lame_enc.dll?
Or will this possibly cause "badness" to happen?

This should be O.K., I think the .dll interface is backward compatible, but please read the doom9 newspage today about a possible bug found in LAME 3.96. I'd give it a few days more testing.

One problem sample doesn't make a bug - that's not serious enough for me to wait before upgrading.
I'd be happy if M$ Office which I'm forced to use at work would only have 'isolated problems' instead of being a constant pain... :D

Hehe,
the thing is, noone has proven up to now, that 3.96 is really better then the HA recommended 3.90.3. Well, I would not hear the difference anyway, so that does not really bother me, but maybe some quality geeks coming here insist on that. Unfortunately there is not too much interest in the testing of the new version and maybe it will take again a long time to get a new HA recommendation. I feel satisfied with the quality of 3.90.3 which seems to be the .dll version BeSweet uses (it changed sometime from 3.92 to the 3.90.3).
I'd rather like more people try to help and really test the new version, I for myself have neither time nor ability ATM. This means, I still trust the guys with the 'good' ears at HA.
