View Full Version : Any new comparisons of DVDShrink and Recode?

I don't want to start any "what's better" thread here, but being a very avid DVDShrink user, I've been told today that Recode was tested much better by the German c't magazine - however I quickly found out the test was very old, comparing DVDShrink in its 1.x version against an older version of recode.

Now my question is (as I don't want to purchase Recode 2.0.0.17 to test it against DVDShrink 3.1.7.6, which I like very much):
Are there any newer tests objectively comparing Recode and DVDShrink? I couldn't find anything using the search...

This Thread (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?threadid=29141&highlight=recode) over at Digital Digest should be very informative. Let's just say at this point, the outputs are very similiar. However, DVDShrink (the author) has stopped active development of DVDShrink (the program), where as Recode will most likely continue to improve.

If your looking for something that will give DVDShrink a run in the quality department check out Instant Copy 8. I have used it a few times and it's output quality is impressive. The downside is it takes longer, is known to undersize, uses a proprietary output format, and the interface isn't half as good as DVDShrink (in my opinion).

Why doesn't anyone seem to use Instant Copy 8 anymore? I left the boards for a while and now it seems like everyone uses DVDshrink if they want an easy solution or some crazy combination of programs and CCE if they want super quality. I've been using Instant Copy for a while and other than the undersize issue, it works great.

I never thought the visual quality from DVDshrink was great, but it was a good tool if you weren't going to nitpick and just enjoy the movie. But I took screen captures from a ton of instant copy encodes and compared them to the original and they seem nearly identical. If someone has hosting, I could upload the zip files with the images and you can look at the difference yourself. Not to mention it kept all the menus.... I don't know. Someone please explain to me how to do this CCE stuff as easily as Instant Copy and I'll try it and see if it really does look better than what I'm using now. So many programs.... God, when the hell is Dual Layer going to get released?

I have been using CCE for quite some time, and there is a hell of a difference in quality, when compression gets larger. So far, I liked IC8 for some Series Disks, but the quality never convinced me. Now there are Progs like DVD2DVD-R and DVD-Rebuilder, which handle Series DVDs automated with CCE. Thats all I ever want.

I never liked IC7, and never bothered to try IC8. It just seemed too slow and not very user friendly. DvdShrink is so much better, plus its free.

I bought IC8 and never installed it once. DVDShrink works for me. As far as recode goes in my testing I think they're right on par with each other with a tad going to (....does it matter..I think not).
