Greetings & Salutations,

I've just in the past 3 months started getting in mpeg encoding. So far, I've just been capturing programs off of cable tv, and encoding them for dvd. I just recently d/l some divx files off the net that I wish to burn to dvd. I've been reading through the forums on the best method for this, and there seem to be a lot of different opinions.

I've got TMPGEnc ver 2.512.52.161 that I wish to use. I set one file up to go using highest quality motion search precision and 2-pass VBR at 4000 average bitrate.

The divx file I have is 640x480 with bitrate 795 kb/s, 23.976 fps and audio bitrate 170 kb/s VBR. I'd prefer to convert it to pal dvd format, but am prepared to do it as ntsc if I have to.

My question is, if I've got everything set up properly, what sort of time frame should I be expecting to convert the video? I've got a P4 3.02ghz (hyper-threading) with 1 gig ram. usually when I'm doing a 1/2 hour tv program it takes approx 50 minutes at 2-pass VBR, but this test one that I set up said that it was going to take about 4 hours. Is this right?

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

Sounds about right, if it's longer than 30 minutes of video that is. On my Athlon 1800 it took me about 8 hours to do 110 minutes of xvid/divx to mpg2 at 5000kbps. If it's not an hour and a half long video or so, something's definitely set up wrong (like you're converting to some framerate you shouldn't be, etc). I know once i had the settings wrong and it had it at about 19 hours for 110 minutes.. not quite :)
