I cant seem to use Tmpgenc or virtual dub to recognize the ac3 audio..
I have a movie in .avi with ac3 audio on 2 cds. What i want to do is convert the video to that of DVD and preferably leave the audio alone. How would I go about doing this when Tmpgeng wont recognize the audio?

perhaps i should use tmpeg to convert the video into mpeg2 and use some sort of other program to join the ac3 audio with that mpeg2 video file?

You can demux the audio with virtualdubmod.

You may also need to fix the demuxed ac3 with besplit if there is an audio delay or if there is duplication/missing data around the join point. A frame will be skipped in the latter instance though, resulting in 32ms desync...

Use tools under the file menu in Tmpgenc to mux the ac3 with the mpg2 file.
