I can't read the subtitles because the Cinema Craft Encoder icon is there. How can I get rid of this?

I'm sorry that I've posted the question but I did search for about an hour or so but couldn't find it. After I posted this question I suddenly found the answer. Don't read my posts again because I'm just a newbie and stupid. Sorry for not having been here as long as you.

windtrader: a quick search (terms: cinemacraft + logo) - those are really obvious terms - yields all the results a guy can ask for.. starting with the CCE faq. I think one search and reading the first hit is not too much to ask for a Doom9 member ;) Most members are notoriously good at searching and reading, and those that aren't, can still learn :cool:

I'm with you guys. I guess what Doom9 is saying is once you become a member you are immediately a full member and given no slack to be a noobe. I'm fine with that since it reinforces our forum as a bunch of hard ass no slack-cutting pussies.

That said all tongue in cheek of course, just in case we have some "stealth" Doom9 members who are really weanies in disguise.

Now seriously, maybe when new members sign on there can be a way to make them read through some of the basic rules most are fairly passionate about. Hell, give them a test to answer correctly before you give them a password. As we all know, nobody bothers reading any forum rules before typing away. For anyone who surfs forums I'm sure the top ten common rules can be cited in one's sleep.

I must be one of the weanies. I've felt for a long time that too many members here are quick to jump on anyone who breaks a rule, when a gentle reminder for a first offense (along with some help) is most often the appropriate response. Remember that rule 4 is a rule too, and it should include being nice to newbies.

And searching isn't all it's cracked up to be. I spent about 20 minutes earlier today trying to search for a post on the location of DVDShrink analysis files, and never did find anything, even though I *know* there was a reply containing the answer sometime in the past month. You can spend a lot of time trying to find the magically combination of key words. I finally gave up and just rooted around on my hard drive till I found the spot.

We really should cut people some slack - how would you feel if you went into a hardware store and a clerk gave you a hard time when you couldn't find the batteries because they were only stocked at the checkout counter?

Kakebeeke did not get any strikes btw, that's the n00b leniency on this board. You won't get away with breaking the rules, but you'll get a reminder the first time, you won't be striked immediately (we do have two strikeable offenses in one post here.. title and searching). Of course, this doesn't apply to somebody that has had an account for a while or has a certain number of posts. But once you've been warned, that's it, the next time there's only the strike button.

I'm glad to hear newbies don't get strikes for a first offense. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but that seems to be a change of policy from a couple of years ago.

My problem isn't with mod behavior (well, with a few exceptions); it's a mods responsibility to enforce the rules. My issue is with members - collectively we quote the rules far too often. Do we go around telling people 'hey, no speeding' or 'don't cross in the middle of the block'?

It especially bothers me when someone's only contribution to a thread is to pipe in with 'we don't cotton to no rule breakers 'round these here parts'. If you're going to quote a rule, the least you can do is try to answer the person's question.

I didn't know about the 'show results by post' thing. Good tip. I'm not sure it would have help in my case. The thread I was looking for was only a few replies long. I just didn't hit on the magic combination of key words.

Poor old Kakebeeke has got to be wondering what he got him/herself into :)

I tend to share Kedirekin thoughts, but think much of this has to do with mods being tired out and becoming increasingly inflexible. It's a natural tendency of anybody seeing the same basic questions for years. It easier to type, "use search", but as was said, searching can be frustrating even for those of us that have been here a long time. It would be more fair to the new folks if a mod linked to a coherent guide on how to best use the search functions efficiently. The old saw about "teach a person how to fish ..." comes to mind, instead of "go find food or starve, you stupid lazy moron". :rolleyes:

Once somebody has been "taught to fish ..." and doesn't do it, beating them over the head with a club has to be an option. Else we would have complete chaos.

I do think all of us should remember this is supposed to be a community. It has to have rules, but over zealous burgomasters are just as unpleasant as lazy community members. After all, the word community implies living in harmony and helping one another.
