VirtualDub (and other programs) capturing problems...

Hey there,

I am having problems capturing video. Previously, I have had absolutely no problems capturing video in VirtualDub or other programs. In fact, I just captured video yesterday with VirtualDub, however, today I cannot. Whenever I try to capture, there's no capturing happening, and when I click again to quit, a dialog comes up:

Warning: No Video Captured
Try turning off overlay, reducing image size, or using 16- or 24-bit color depth.

I have tried all of these to no avail.
I just intstalled the Hola! version of XviD today, and after that is when I noticed I couldn't capture. I uninstalled it, and tried it: still no luck. I reinstalled it again, along with my WDM drivers, both to no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Something that I've done when I've ran into other problems with other programs is to use System Restore in Windows XP. U could do it and set it to a time u know it worked and see if it works...then try installing things one by one and see if there are any conflicts. You can always undo the restore if it doesn't work.

I would do that, but Windows platform as a whole sucks, and Windows restore eats up 7 gigs of space, so I turned it off. How unfortunate for me. However, I did turn it back on incase something else happens. Oh well, does anyone else have any suggestions?

Unfortunatelly, it's very often that in such and similar case noone has solution, and fresh install of Win is required.

I just made it, after my Capture card stopped to work in WIn XP. All started with some codec trouble, and I tried to fix it, but finally screwed whole Windows up.
I think that BT Wincap driver caused trouble - I had some registry entries for PCI devices, capture card, which where undeletable and uneditable.



Did you try capturing with some other codec instead Xvid? Also, it's good idea to try some Mpeg capture program, just to see is Cap driver problem..

thy these:
uninstall xvid
uninstall the card drivers (btwincap/other) and other software
remove the device from the device manager.
turn off your pc.
take the device phisically out of your computer
turn it on and wait till windows boots and 'gets quiet' (just to make sure it's gone, software wise)
turn it off
reinstall the card
reinstall the driver and/or software
reinstall the xdiv version that last worked

although i must admitt, i don't thing it's xvid related. worth a try though. 15 mins, without windows reinstall.

Well, I did manage to fix the problem. The only thing that is wrong with your other suggestion is that my capture card is also my video card (GeForce FX5950 Ultra). Removing that would thus not enable to see what the problem was.
To solve the problem I merely removed both my VIVO drivers and the main Video Adapter drivers and reinstalled them. That fixed the problem.
That down, what would you suggest for capturing anime/animated shows with decent to a lot of action with a range of 35 - 80 megs/episode with a decent amount of quality.
XviD does speed well, but quality and size not so good. 3ivX does speed and good compression quality, but the filesize is still big. I refuse to use DivX (I hate the way it looks, but will use if someone can suggest something good). I'm at a loss...any suggestions?
