Are you interested in a ffdshow 'lite' ??

Hi,

i dont know if people agree with me, but IMO ffdshow is trying to be too much at a time, and instead of bugs getting fixed, there are more and more bugs introduced whenever i test it.

What would you guys think about a 'ffdshow lite', concentrating

- on decoding only ( no encoder = ffvfw bundled )
- no audio decoding
- only MPEG4 ( DivX, XviD, 3ivX ) and M$ MPEG4 decoding video ( DivX3, MPEG4V1/2/3 )

Opinions please

All those options only bring a lot of problems, I can totally agree. Ffdshow should focus on what is does best: fast decoding of mpeg4 video.

A lite ffdshow is a great idea.Just for MPEG-4 and M$ MPEG4.
But RV10 and RV20 decoding must also be included because ffdshow is the only directshow decoder that can decode those FourCC's.

I suggested some time ago to b0rk the encoder, so that it doesn't output anything like mpeg4, but unplayable crap instead, but this suggestion was considered 'dirty' :p

However, I have no problem with downloading ffdshow separately. But well, some users are really lazy ...

the way Gabest did it with the libmpeg2 directshow filter i would like to see the same for libavcodec :)

i would love to see a dshow encoder based on ffmpeg, but i think it would be also great if the encoders/decoders would be divided into different files, so people can choose what they want

i think a decoding only version is desired, but i don't think it should only be for mpeg4 variants. the more the better. that's the power of ffdshow.

so i think there should be 2 versions: 1. decoding only. 2. encoding + decoding (to make sure the encoding part is compatible with the filters in the decoding part)

2 versions is more then enough to maintain. and it seems it HAS been tough as the devs decided to go for a single version afterall, and drop the encoding version only.

very good idea. as long as the postprocessing, picture properties and maybe deinterlacing is available i'd be happy to download a lite version.

it would also be interesting to hear from the developers of ffdshow if they will think about this if enough people vote for it or if they say 'this project is no democracy' ;)

mf: Considering that jcsston got striked for his post, there is not much more to say, is it...in this moment, people on IRC make jokes about Mods getting free beer and vodka...you get the idea?

Why is it not possible to set some compiler switches for both versions? I can't imagine that having to project files or sth like that is that hard. I know that it is more than <zero> work, but it shouldn't be too bad...

Well, they already are 2 projects.

Instead I think that keeping a Decoder-Only and a Encoder-Only would be better.
It could help to focus on particular bugs or features.

However I'm happy also with nowadays FFDshow, so I don't borther if I will never see a Decoder-Only version.

You know, I really wished Milan would branch out ffdshow's CVS into a STABLE and an UNSTABLE/EXPERIMENTAL branch (kind of like XviD did on it's way to 1.0, or Mozilla) so there was a version that was keeping the same set of features (instead of getting new features and bugs every week) that will only get bugfixes so it gets more stable with each release...

(Perhaps that way also more people would hack away at the code if they could concentrate on fixing bugs that bite them without having to fear that a CVS update could introduce a slew of new bugs...)

This poll has a good intention: show the developers of ffdshow the demand for a "decoding only" filter (if possible) next to a fullblown all-in-one filter.
