bad DVD quality (Matrix Revolutions and others) [thread split]

i agree...the matrix revolutions' cover is one of the worst, they used 4 different posters on 1 cover, very ugly...they should have just chosen 1 or made 4 different dvd covers.

at least the pal version i got is relatively ugly on dvd as well, blocks and stuff. (so it might be a bad 'original'?)

Artefacts? I'd try to get my money back. IMHO such 'quality' is not acceptable nowadays.

quality never seems to be an issue these days... no production companies seem to give a stuff, as long as they can sucker people into buying them... in fact, its probably part of their marketing stratagy... release crappy video and audio, then in a few months release an "ultimate edition with remasted audio and video" and get people to cough up the bucks again...

as for difficult scenes, i found the whole zion scene difficult, because theres lots of action happening, and the video is quite dark...i had a (brief) look at the spanish rip release of this.. and that encode was pretty rubbishy too (and the audio will have you laughing so hard...its in low-volume english, with some monotoned voice overlayed..sounds so damn funny), so perhaps this is just a plain difficult dvd to rip... still, please, if anyone gives it a shot and finds it easy, or a good solution, please help me out. cheers.

One example springs to my mind immediately:

Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers - Special Extended Edition (PAL RC2)

This one did not at all fulfill my expectations in quality:
apart from the fact that something is not quite right with the overall colors, the SEE is quite blocky in some places. Keeping in mind that the movie is spread over 2 DVDs, that's about 100min of movie per DVD - what do the pro's get their money for, me wonders!

So, the quality is worse than the SEE of 'Fellowship', ... but reciproc proportional to the quality, the price was raised by about 10€ IIRC, compared to 'Fellowship'.

What a bad world ;)

How strange, Didée! I haven't noticed any problems with The Two Towers SEE (PAL) but saw quite some artefacts in The Fellowship SEE (as far as I recall in several of the scenes set in the shire - at least where Gandalf throws the ring into the fire - I'll have to check that). Anyway, still these two DVDs are most 'precious' to me... Insofar I have to revise my initial statement: Sometimes such quality seems acceptable to me - if it is only for few instances in an otherwise good DVD.

BTW, the strange colours in both SEEs are a feature, not a bug. ;)

I can't understand how you can complain on the video&audio on this one. I think both of them are close to perfect(On R2PAL). No blocks at all and no edge enhancement.

Levelled backgrounds (combined with flickering light, sometimes) still seem to make for a problem on some otherwise HQ DVDs. And watching movies on quite a big and good TFT display can be a double-edged sword...

one problem is that movies are made for DVD these days, with buckets of special feautres nobody in their right (and possibly wrong) minds would care about.

there's also the matter of lots of soundtracks. read the back of the disc - if it says "english 5.1, english DTS, japanese 5.1, french 2.0" then you can rest assured the picture will be poo

remember 10mbps... that means instantaneous bitrates can't get above this either, or the hardware will choke.

also, the longer the movie, the worse it will look (LOTR case-in-point). you simply can't get good quality with a 6 hour movie, 5 soundtracks and subs in every language except latin, plus a 60 minute documentary in field-blended-interlaced converted NTSC.

it's simply bad planning. nobody cares for shovelware, especially if it screws up the real reason you buy the disc - the feature.

hey, i like special features! :) usually ive already watched the movie (some movies like matrix several times) by the time i get the dvd.. so i like the bonus features and extra comment tracks. although i do agree that the bitrate is stretched now adays.. i guess well have to wait for blu/hd/whatever to save us ;)

speaking of bad transfers, the origional matrix is pretty bad.. although granted its a fairly early dvd.. its 2 hours plus has the seamless branching parts, bov parts and bonus features on top of it... definately a stretch.. but well worth it imho

Back to Revolutions - is the PAL version that worse than the NTSC one?

Meaning one should get the NTSC preferably... if we want to buy the movie ?

Yesterday i noticed that Forrest Gump R2 Dutch has some weird artifacts at the vietnam part. Look at scene when Forrest is saving Bubba and there is a large explosion. It looks like swapped field order.
Not as serious as a too low bitrate but it's very noticable.

Artifacts are only on the computer or high priced TV's....

And 99% of DVD are made for people with 27" and less..:confused:

At least thats what my opinion is.

I have the NTSC R1 of Outland,and its 4:3 letterboxed(Like my 1941 dvd as well!?)with godawful interlaced lines(See the converstation with Connery's wife before she leaves the moon),the room her and their kid are standing in has HUGE horizontal lines that FLICKER bad enough to give a seizure!.........On ANY TV!!!

Its a very early release on DVD,and they may have fixed it since,but Id feel raped if I looked and there was a newer release....

Ive also had a DVD just up and quit playing......anyone had those?

It was an ANchor Bay Kentucky Fried Movie DVD.

They replaced it,but I was without it for a few weeks(I had to send mine in for a swapout).

I was going to ask Doom if he was ever gonna do a MPEG2 encoder comparo,considering his takes on MPEG4,I would value his opinion(and readily anyone else's here).
