where's the xvid codec in downloads?

hi. i'm on a clean system here (just formatted) and need to sort out my codecs.

i'm staying far away from any nemo pack style things, and need to encode in all the codecs so ffdshow is not an option.

i thought i'd install divx5.11, divx3 alpha, and xvid. all of them just the codec (no divx player etc) and all of them only playing there own stuff (divx5 won't play divx 3).

i came to this site thinking it will all be here but i can't find xvid.

i haven't actually installed anything yet so i was wondering is there a reason they didn't include xvid?

can anyone here tell me the most stable way to install codecs to allow me to play everything?

I simply can't believe that you were unable to find a link to any of XviD's encoder or decoder builds by simply visiting the XviD section of the forum!

If this really is the case it does not say much for all the hard work that's been put into this forum over the years!

I think rudeboy actually means doom9's downloads section, instead of other download locations. I do actually recall Doom9 hosting a recent Koepi binary.

WOW, jesus, very sorry EVERYONE. i come back and find two replies saying i should search and read more plus i get a warning for violating rule #1.

i obviously didn't make myself clear, and now that i read it again i sort of see why.


the key words in the subject are "in downloads".

i am very aware that there are many sites available to download the xvid codec and i know the forum also has loads of information on it.

but my question is why doesn't Doom9 offer it in their own download section, (ie the one on the left at doom9.net).
i thought there may be a reason they don't like it just like the Nemo codec pack.

so anyone have any answers now that i've rephrased it?

and answers to my other question are welcome as well (can anyone here tell me the most stable way to install codecs to allow me to play everything?).

P.S, again very sorry for upsetting you guys, and to the mod who gave me a warning, am i still in the wrong now that i've explained it?

It's just a guess, but maybe because there are new binaries available very often. But, probably only Doom or the XviD guys know the answer.

Try ffdshow (it's only a decoder, but it can decode many formats).

thanks but i need to encode to all formats as well and ffdshow has proved to be troublesom e when installerd with the seperate codecs.

I suppose you will be generating XviD encodes, so whether you like it or not you'll atomatically install XviD's version of an Mpeg4 decoder -which ain't half bad at playing back all Mpeg4 content.

That said, if you are viewing your encodes with say, Media Player Classic, it's perfectly possible to have XviD encodes using the XviD decoder, DivX encodes using the DivX decoder, 3viX encodes using the 3viX decoder and even NeroDigital encodes using the NeroDigital decoder...

... is this what you want to do?

I do actually recall Doom9 hosting a recent Koepi binary.Then you know more than I. I've never had any XviD binaries for download. Once XviD 1.0 is out, I'll add it (but only that version). The update rythm has slowed down now that we're getting close to 1.0, but with sometimes daily updates, it doesn't make much sense to host such an application on my site.. it's just a lot of update work. For the same reason I don't add every ffdshow build.

Your memory is better than mine :). (though there is a binary in one of the rippacks)

i meant i found it troublesome. some programs i had like avipreview would crash and the error would be with ffdshow. when i removed the divx codec it worked fine.


@SeeMoreDigital - that's what i wantto do,and yeah by everything i only meant 3ivx, Divx, and xvid. would there be any advantage in using all three seperate codecs rather than xvid as you said it "ain't half bad at playing back all Mpeg4 content".

i'm using Zoom player Professioinal 3.31 if it makes any difference.

Well all I do is make sure that I do the following: -

That the 'XviD Decoder' does not have anything checked in the 'FourCC Support' section.

That the '3viX Video Decoder' DirectShow Priority, does not have anything checked.

That the 'DivX Decoder' Quality settings, Support Generic Mpeg4, is left unchecked.

Basically, as long as you don't allow any one decoder take priority over another's (4CC) each Mpeg4 codec should be decoded by its own decoder.

Needless to say it works with Media Player Classic so I guess it should work with Zoom Player.

well i did exactly as you described with several versions of xvid and every time it said missing xvidcore.dll.

searched in the forum, similar things have happenned.

so now i'm just using 3ivx for xvid and divx3, and divx5 for divx5 and divx4.

hmm, i now see why xvid isn't included. where';s that final version!

hmm, i now see why xvid isn't included. where';s that final version! It sounds to me like the only reason the 3viX filter plays your XviD encodes is because you have not installed the XviD codec (correctly) yet!

I took the liberty of installing Zoom Player last night. And everything worked perfectly for me.

Regarding the XviD codec. If you look in the XviD section of the forum you will see that it's still in beta testing mode. At the present moment it's up to RC4 (Release Candidate 4). I'm sure the final version will be available soon but there's nothing 'really' wrong with any of the RC versions... They all generate encodes way better looking than DivX!

Install the Matroska Pack Full (http://packs.matroska.org) and deselect ffdshow. This should install most audio codecs that you would need for playback also.

I do assure you my method works perfectly with Zoom Player, provided you have XviD's direct show filter installed, along with your other Mpeg4 direct show filters!

Personally I would not add more filters and packs until you become familiar with the basics of your original request
