Is there any appreciable advantage in using lame.dll --alt-preset cbr and adding riff wav headers over using lame ACM in virutaldub when muxing wav mp3 to avi?

I'm having problems getting wave header writing working well in besweet, so ACM is more convenient but I have no idea what kind of settings/quality the ACM encoder has as noone ever talks about it :)

Using alt preset has several advantageous switches, see hydrogenaudio.org for more information. There is no reason to need to add riff headers to mux with avi, simply use VirtualDubMod or AviMux GUI for muxing mp3 streams.

AVImux GUI is incorrectly detecing cbr mp3s as vbr with recent lame builds, so that's no use.

VirtualDubMod I honestly can't work out whether it is detecting the mp3 as cbr or not - I'll get back to you on that one :P

Yep, you'd only want the RIFF header if you were using original VirtualDub.

Now there are much more handy tools for doing that, like KpeX said.

some users reported their DVD players fail on cutted streams, Lame ACM would avoid this
