New Guide: How to Add DVD Text to your DVD

Guide is almost comprehensive -- What if last entry prior to VMG_TXTDT_MG is greater then a single 2048 segment >> when you insert dummy text data table. Happens in about 10% of the ifo's I've studied. You need to find size of all prior tables then insert after, then increment following tables.

Your method in your guide and "dummy file" have been around for a while. The guide was first made by ImaWeTodd on vcdhelp.com (now videohelp.com) in August 2003. http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=175537

@Fallenangel: I have done over 600 DVDs with the method in my guide and never have I found an instance where my guide did not work. I think 10% must be a very high guestimate.

@Video Dude: Actually the method you refer to on VCDHELP is not complete and does not correctly support punctuation... nor does it properly explain some of the steps... Hence the reason for my new guide written totally from scratch with animated screen shots done BY ME on MY COMPUTERS...

The dummy file included with my guide is totally mine as well... I made it... so I am not quite sure what your point was to imply?

I did not say it was 1:1 copy. You rewrote it and added your own screen shots and file.

Your method (Section 3) is the same as ImaWeTodd's method and does not correctly support punctuation either. You did point the punctuation problem out in your guide.

Had his info been complete. Had he ever responded to questions in the post you just linked or PMs I sent him, I think you might be right. But since I had to figure it out on my own investing many hours of research and trial and error I don't see the point of stepping on my efforts to give credit to someone that got it 2/3 right.

@geffroman Sorry to open up such a can of worms.
I'm guessing you don't do to many "full" backups retaining original structure content. I have over 150 video_ts.vobs that include textdata on my hard drive - 27 contain multiple segments just prior to textdata. Warner seems to like using complicated structures. Your guide will work fine if the final dvd is simple. But soon/now the duals will be out and people will be adding textdata to complex video_ts structures. Just thought you might want to update guide to reflect state of the art.

Actually I keep everything... I edit out junk like FBI, Studio Logos, Previews... but keep all menus... I use IfoEdit, DVDReMake and DVD-Rebuilder... I have never counted but can guess I have many Warner Bros DVDs as well...

I am not pig headed... If you have info you would like to share that would help me improve my guide that would be beautiful...

However, guides utilizing methods like mine are outdated the MOMENT someone like you makes a tool like Titlewriter. I don't see myself ever doing it manually again now that I have your software...

I got a little snippy with Video Dude because the way I see it...
[list=1] Somebody posts a guide in Aug 2003 that did not allow the use of punctuation or explain how to read and work with the sector numbers...
I improved upon that method with my guide in April 2004. A thank you would be in order rather than stepping on my thread and diminishing my efforts by trying to give credit elsewhere... Especially since anyone diverted back to that old guide is taking a step back in functionality.
Then you post your link to your program in my thread to which I am grateful as it does for me what I always wanted and obsoletes the manual method entirely, also adds second line access, also allows even MORE flexibility with punctuation, also takes care of the sector size issue we have been discussing... All wonderful additions...[/list=1]
I wish I had found you prior to writing my own guide... But now that you are here I will post a link to your software (with your permission of course) on my website.

Two things I would suggest if you don't mind. Give us the ability browse to the location of our choice for the BACKUP files.

And add a donation button to your Help menu for those of us that would like to show our appreciation for your efforts.

As to donations: not going to bother - Wrote this for myself
As to permission: Couldn't hurt. All those poor people out there who are not adding dvd_text now and then getting jukeboxes will appreciate it later.

good guide :cool: and who cares who wrote what first as long as there is a current guide that is more up to date. Congrats on your first guide mate ;)

I remember when I wrote my crude blanking guides yonks ago and then they were modified and updated but it was for the better anyway. Eventually programs like CloneDVD basically copied these methods on how to remove stuff as it's a rather simple process if you are a code. I'm still to find the post ages ago that gave me the idea to remux a blank .m2v file into the VOB that started me on the blanking road it but I guess I'll never find it :(

I'm not keen on people who try to take the glory and credit for updating guides but I don't see anywhere where geoffroman claimed this. I can however understand the hard work he will have put into the guide though. Having someone say 'it's been done before' so you should give credit for your guide to them when he's not claiming glory himself is a little extreme ;)

anyway, I got a standalone player of a friend months ago but I very rarely watch DVD at the minute :(. I didn't even realise it had DVDText until I pressed a button on the remore and it said 'No Text' :)
