How to setup compression for Xvid decoding on slow pc (celeron 400Mhz) ?

Hi, my fried has a slow PC.
He lent me his DVD because of compressing to Xvid.
How to setup compression for Xvid decoding on celeron 400Mhz ?
I suppose disabling GMC, ... do you have any other ideas?

GMC, qpel, b-frames off, resolution should not go above 640*xxx.

If decoder was smarter, b-frames would *help* because they can be dropped without any problems, whenever there is a need.

Unfortunately decoder is not smart enough, and bframes do need more decoding power.

I was concidering adding a feature to encoder (v 1.1 of course) that would minimize decoding needs - more not coded blocks and macroblocks, more motion vectors that require no filtering... that would come at the cost of quality of course. Do you think it would be useful?

Hi, recently TorgoGuy posted nice XviD options speed test in this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=71948 where you can find effects of particular options on encoding speed.

In your case, I would diable GMC (like you said), QPel and B-frames too. Enabling turbo mode will speed up encoding, you can also consider disabling WHQ mode.

I think this settings are a good compromise between speed and quality.

Running something like geexbox [see google] Will allow my PII 400 to play 640x480 encodes with Qpel, B frames, and GMC fairly smooth. All I have to do is disable GMC and it is smooth as butta.

Yeah, definitely. At the moment, one needs rather high-end gear to encode and play back using xvid ... It would be really great to see this feature implemented in future versions of xvid.
And, speaking of playback on older computers: i understand that your approach is aimed at the encoding side. Is there any way to speed up the decoding process as well?
