Flickering playback?

Apoligies if this is another one of those "noob questions" but ive checked every FAQ and dont really know what to search for cause i cant narrow down the problem.

Basically, i got my friend to encode an xvid for me, he didnt keep the original file (GRR) so im stuck with only this.

On playback the picture flickers every half-second or so like:

black-picture-black-picture

its almost fit-inducing :( Ive tried opening it in vdub but it wont have any of it, nor will it play it back so it wont let me reencode. I tried divxfix but that hasnt helped so im unsure what the problem is as it doesnt seem like an index problem?

TIA peeps. Im no good with mp4 encoding, my limit of knowledge is vdub. :(

Anyway, the primary question is: what decoder is used for playback?

Just a couple of hours ago I had to to unregister Nero filters, because they were messing with my playback *again*. And they are not the only ones, all mpeg-4 decoders I know just try to decode xvid without even asking (except ffdshow, which actually could do that because it decodes xvid correctly. All others don't).

Do that: find out what's decoding, and if it's not xvid - make it xvid. It should be enough but if it isn't - come back here.

Sorry but this sounds like warez talk, which is not allowed here.I've tried opening it in vdub but it wont have any of it, nor will it play it back so it wont let me reencode. Sounds as if there is no Xvid codec installed on your system. Download the latest build from koepi's site'.

(If = no go) then:
1. download Graphedit (get from doom9 )
2. install Graphedit
3. open Graphedit
4. drop your file into Graphedit-program window
5. make a screenshot of the program window
6. make it available for us

No no no you miss understand. I usually backup my legitimately purchased DVDs to mpeg2 for SVCDs (DVD2SVCD), however, for anime; avi files are significantly smaller than mpeg2 and as ill only watch them on my pc anyway i asked a friend todo it for me as i have little experience with avi backups. Its just how everything has turned out, i dont want to ask him again todo it for me :/ Id rather try and fix these 2 files than spend HOURS ripping my DVDs and learning how to properly encode them with the right settings and stuff. Its only 2 files out of a batch that have gone wrong.

I do have xvid installed, and ffdshow and divx 5.05 codec. All the other files work fine, just these two.

xvid version: ? dunno, cant find it, but its pretty recent and works with everything ive used it on before.
ffdshow: 0.4.6 build 4645 (12/02)

This combo works for everything, and ive never had any trouble before and still with other files. Playback is using BSplayer, latest build.

vdub: 1.4.13

On opening the file in vdub it gives the error: improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI...

However, it says this for all the files, even those that playback perfectly, but in vdub itll not open any of them and give me a "error decompressing video frame - unknown error".

Are there any other programs thatll let me open and reencode the file? OR just fix these?

ffdshow: 0.4.6 build 4645 (12/02) You definitively should consider ugrading ffdshow. A good way to do this is to install the Matroska Decoder Pack.On opening the file in vdub it gives the error: improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI... This is because vdub cannot read vbr mp3.

Suggestions:
1. Follow my instructions above ... Graphedit
2. Find Xvid verision Vdub -> Video/Compression/ Only mark Xvid with one click. Then press the About-Button on the right.
3. Download and install Vdubmod from Sourceforge, but remember to also download the relevant dll-packages etc.
3.1 Install, open, and then load one of your files and save the file using Direct Stream Copy

updated my xvid to the latest version from sourceforge too.

Been playing round with nandub and vdubmod, neither will open it, nor will various avi to mpeg transcoders work, so i got pissed off and deleted the file :rolleyes: so im gonna have to ask my friend todo them agian *sigh*

Yeah, well - that's the problem right there: ffdshow is being used to decode the video (otherwise it would say "XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder"), not XviD (unless you've chosen "XviD 4" for XVID on the ffdshow codec property page).

Go to ffdshow's properties page and choose "disabled" for XVID - that way it'll really use the XviD DirectShow decoder for playback.

(Using the latest and greatest ffdshow build from http://athos.leffe.dnsalias.com/ might not be a bad idea either...)

That just crashes explorer on attempting to play all my xvids LOL :rolleyes: nm ;)

EDIT: OoooOo I think the latest ffdshow has done something good, either that or i should stop playing with the settings now :D Playback is far better
