Help with RealVideo

I wanted to try my hand at doing some realvideo files, especially after finding out that realvideo is probably the best choice for low bitrate MPEG4. I have done XviD and happy with it and think it is the best I have seen so far.

I am truly confused after visiting this forum, to the point where I am paralyzed. There seem to be so many variations of this codec that it is truly baffling. There is AutoRV 10, Elysian RV10, Anime, etc , etc.

As a somewhat newby, can someone point me where to begin. As in, which software to download? ALso what are all these emulations of RV10? Are they separate projects or just add-on to one main project? Also an on-line guide for configuring my RV10 encodes would be cool.

Just a suggestion. Maybe a sticky to let folks (like me) know what project is what and what they are doing and how they differ from the next or how they are similar.

note that rv9 is not mpeg-4
also the tools you mentioned are simply guis which help you encoding with rv9, they are not different codecs, just different tools using the same codec

so try some of them and choose which one you like best :)

Yes, I did call RV MPEG4. I know Microsoft does not want their WMV called MPEG4 either, but gosh darn, they sure do act like it in many respects, dont they :) :D

mpeg-4 is a video coding standard, which can be followed or not
xvid, divx5 aso follow it; rv9, wmv9 aso dont follow it

Thanks again for the further education I am getting today. I guess I should visit this site more often ;)

I gues that explains why the standalone DVD/DivX/XviD players play those formats and some play WMV. But why do none play RealVideo? Is it beacuse the power of M$ at work here? It must be, because while their encoder has come a long way with version 9, they are still behind those others as far as quality is concerned. WMV 9 just wants to smooth evrything all the daag gone time (gggrrr):angry:

hi dvwannab, RealVideo 9/10 is not similar to MPEG-4 in many ways except the frametypes, and the use of 16x16 macroblocks. With RV10 'Elysian' I added a 2-pass VBR rate control that works almost the same as the rate control in XviD (curve compression), but rate control is not related to the codec algorithms.

Encoding with RealVideo does seem a little complicated, since it has been in constant development recently (EHQ, RV10, Elysian etc). Your best bet is to start with the RealVideo Information thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73035), and download a 3rd party GUI that comes with all the new features included. AutoRV10 needs a few updates, see the 2nd to last page in that thread.

It is however stabilizing, and the most recent Producer from the Helix Community (https://helixcommunity.org/beula/download/) has the latest RV10 Elysian and all known bug fixes included.
