View Full Version : Can't back up ISOs larger than 4 GB

Hi, I'm not a newbie but I've never tried doing this until now. I created 8 different movies with Ulead DVD Workshop 2.0, I saved them on my hard drive as *.ISO. I've noticed that when I try to back up the actual iso (to a dvd-rw) that is 4.0 gb or larger, that it doesn't backup correctly. All the others that are under 4.0gb have no problem (verified iso after burn). When using "My Computer" and click once on Dvd drive it's in, on the left side (WinXP), under details, it will state the actual size of the file that it should be. But when you look inside to click on it once and view its detail, it shows ALOT smaller. Extracting it from the dvd-rw to hard drive gives me errors. I tried burning this in CDFS & UDF 1.02 file systems.
I'm assuming this is file system limitation like FAT. Is there anyway to do this with splitting it up? Is there another file system that can handle this?
If I do have to split it up can it be done in the iso format so that I can burn from the iso image off the dvd-rw media?
Thanks in advance

Change your file system to NTFS

alexnoe - if you've read this correctly... are you saying I can format a DVD-RW to NTFS. I already have the NTFS file system on WinXP Pro, and the ISOs already reside on my hard drive. I want the actual iso file (that happens to be larger than 4gb) on a dvd-rw. Is this possible? I know I can split the image up with DVDdecrypter but I want to keep the original iso intact as 1 file. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Ah...that you mean. Then i misread your question.
Then you have to use UDF 1.02 for your DVD (and only UDF!). It works for example with Nero.

Thanks for the reply.
The first I did was UDF 1.02. And although it this file seemed to burned correctly, findings show that when the file is under 4gb there no problem, but when it is larger, the detail on left (by selecting it with WinXP's 'My Computer') shows the correct size. But when you hover the mouse over it the file size is MUCH smaller. I try to view, extract or copy the iso it doesn't work. It does extract it but there like dummy files that are invalid and unplayable with a much smaller file size. Just for the record I've tried this quite a few times with different media, ISOs and burning apps (not to mention some different UDF versions).
At this point I've just given up. I just assume its a file size limitation that the UDF file format has. I just wish someone could confirm this so that this technical mystery would stop bugging me.

I already have burnt 4,3 GB files to DVDs using Nero...

I guess I'll nero a try. I usually don't like nero because back in the ver. 5.5 days it used to give me problems with drivers and conlict with my other burnings. Have they fixed those bugs or is it still the same way?
And just to confirm and make sure I understand you correctly. You have used nero using UDF 1.02 to backup 1 (one) single file with a file size of 4.3gb successfully?
Again thanks for your, much appreciated

Yes, I recorded single large files, and the files (they were AVIs and MKVs) play correctly.
If Nero causes such driver errors for you, you can, if you have Nero 6, also use the image recorder, use it to make an ISO file and then record the image with any other program.
