I came here looking for a program for ripping/encoding DVDs with an "idiot-button". I really just wanted to click and rip without too much hassle, and went to
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/divx-encoding.htm
where I visited the Xvid -> Gordian Knot tutorial.
It told me to use robot4rip to get the vobfiles and then open the DVD2AVI project file (.d2v) with Gordian Knot.

I was routed to the robot4rip tutorial and followed it. The DVD was ripped, but I couldn't seem to find a .d2v file
I've tried several times now, switching around on the settings mentioned in the tutorial but I just can't seem to find this file.

What on earth am I missing here? I knew I'm dumb with those things but I never imagined it was this bad

If anyone is worried about legal issues here, the reason I'm ripping this damn disc in the first place is that my TV's SCART got burned by lack of grounding. I use my computer as a DVD player, and since the TV SCART is fubared I have to use my VCRs plug and then route the signal to the TV from there. Problem is that the MacroVision (or whatever it is) protection is screwing the signal, so I need to get rid of it before watching the DVD. I can of course play straight from the .VOB files, but they are huge and I don't want to waste more disc-space than nessescary on this. Hence I want this mess encoded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

when you use r4r you got to use index/demux to get the d2v. if you have trouble doing that, open dvd2avidg from your start menu (gordian knot/apps) and use save project from there. problem with doing that way is you have to know which track of audio you want, and how to force film if your in ntsc land.

Hi-

And so, since he's looking for something really easy, it might be easier for him to go with AutoGK. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64266) About all he has to do before starting is to make sure that DVDDecrypter is Configured Correctly (http://len0xmirror1.serveftp.net/~len0x/tutorial/AutoGK.html#3) before ripping the vobs. After that, it's automated all the way, or he can do a little bit of tweaking if he prefers. Then all he has to do is wait a bit before being handed the completed movie .avi (s). I'd say it's about as idiot-proof as you can get.

Thanks a bunch. I just discovered what was wrong.
It seems robot4rip automatically configured itself with the path
C:\Program Files\GordianKnot\DVD2AVI\DVD2AVI.exe
while it should have been
C:\Program Files\GordianKnot\DVD2AVI\DVD2AVIdg.exe

Definetely something I should have noticed :o

I'll have a look at that AutoGK program as well, but you know how it goes... "Make something idiot-proof and someone will make a better idiot" :D

Thanks for your help and for not biting my head off for asking a stupid question :)
