needed when recording an initial capture from a VHS tape to avi.

As you can see I have just begun to learn about video.

That very much depends on the codec you use for capturing.

For HuffyYUV, MJPEG or (gasp!) raw AVI, just capture one minute of video, then multiply the size of the one minute capture by the length of footage on your VHS. I believe for HuffyYUV and raw, that will be exact. For MJPEG it'll be pretty close.

That might work for other codecs, or it might not. It depends on the codec, and perhaps a little bit on how consistently compressible your footage is.

Thanks, I know that sounds a bit dumb but I am trying to figure what size H/Drive I need to buy.

I started trying to back up the kids VHS tapes using a WinfastXP TV 2000 Expert card, captured to Mpeg2, produced VOB in TMPGEnc and burned in Nero. Basically this produced a low end movie with pixelation in any fast action scenes. Overall probably accepable for kids but I would like to learn how to correct the problems.

I have been told the way to go is to record in AVI format, edit, then compress until correct.

Anyone have other advice ?

hi and welcome to the forum,

a) get yourself a fast harddrive with 120 gig plus (when i'm talking ' fast' i mean 7200 rpm 8 mb cache - although SCSI HDs would be much better ;))

b) have you seen this guide: http://www.doom9.org/capture.htm

cheers

10,000 RPM Serial ATA is even better ;)

Thanks & sorry I took so long to reply.

This the answer I was looking for (120g +) and yes I was intending on getting a 120g WD 7200 with 8meg of cache. Just can't afford another sata 10,000 drive as I just finished building this box with P4 - 3gig and 2x 36gig Raptors set as raid 0. Box also has 80gig WD (8meg) as data slave.

No I hadn't yet found the capture guide, but will do some study there.
