Hallo guys

I need help

I have “Gordian knot 0.28.7” as well as “Clone DVD 1.1.6.1”. I’m making copies of my best DVD films in order to have them also in my holiday’s home.

I red the beautiful Decrypter guide as well as many of the other guides available at doom9.net but, even after this, it is not clear to me if it is possible, for those films where I want to avoid the “Clone DVD” compression and preserve quality, to subdivide the DVD content in two decrypted blocks and burn them on two separate DVDs, saving at the same time on both disks the scene selection capability and the other menus too.
If the answer is yes, what is the doom9 guide that I have to read or, should this guide doesn’t exist, what are the steps that I have to perform?

Thank you very much for your help

Roberto

i possibly might have misunderstood you, but anyway it should be easy to backup your DVD on your harddisc using DVD Decrypter, and then apply DVD Shrink if something does not fit to your DVD.

It also depends on the size, for example I have to use DVD shrink to compress the quality before i can back a DVD-9 up. Try those two proggies out and if I misunderstood something, my apologies.

"to subdivide the DVD content in two decrypted blocks and burn them on two separate DVDs, saving at the same time on both disks the scene selection capability and the other menus too."

You meant the whole part of the main video on a DVD, so that you can save 100%?

If that is the case, I believe its possible but I never tried to so cant help.

It seems to me the guide you want is DVD-9 -> 2 DVD+ -R

There are so many ways to split a DVD these days.

The DVD-9 -> 2 DVD±R guides are tried and true methods. DVDFab is dead simple, but has some limitations (can't control split point, no menu on second disk). IfoEdit gives you more control, but has a steep learning curve, and the number of steps means more chance for error.

You can also use DVDShrink to split. One of my favorite approaches is to do a movie-only backup to disk 1, and then shrink the movie to still frames on disk 2. The advantage of this is you don't have to get up to flip the disk in the middle of the movie. The disadvantage is that you often have to apply light compression to disk 1.

Lastly you can look at one of the stripping tools like DVDStripper or DVDReMake. The approach is a little different, but gives you more power. By controlling what you remove rather than splitting, you can leave assets (like your favorite extras) on both disks, and remove things you don't like (like intros and warning screens) from both disks.

About Film partitioning on more than one DVD

Dear Doom9 Members, thank you for your answers

What I mean can better be explained by the following example

Suppose that I want to burn on a DVD+R the wonderful film Contact. This DVD (7.27GB extras included) doesn’t fit in the single DVD + R layer; so if I decrypt it as a single block, in the burning phase Clone DVD will apply its compression algorithm to shrink the 43 film’s chapters and all the remaining material within the 4.7gB limit. In doing so the copy quality will suffer in a measure dependent from the compression factor applied.

The question is: is it possible to create two decrypted blocks containing for example:

The menus and scene selection capability plus the first 30 chapters
of the film (first decrypted block to be burned on the first
DVD+R).

The menus and scene selection capability plus the remaining 13
chapters of the film (second decrypted block to be burned on the
second DVD+R).

In this way each block should be less than 4.7GB and Clone DVD shouldn’t apply any compression to the material: the quality of the final copy should be as good as the original material. Moreover, the scene selection should in this way be possible on both DVD.

Thank you very much for your help; please, excuse me if my first explanation was not enough clear...

Yes it can be done! :search:

Also as Abond said in your other thread. You need to use this guide!
It seems to me the guide you want is DVD-9 -> 2 DVD+ -R

@cipputi_01:

Indeed, use the search, read the guides, and keep all your postings on the same topic in one thread.

That said, there is new functionality in CloneDVD 2 that might have not made its way into the guides yet. First, download the upgrade for CloneDVD 2, which is free for those who purchased the old version. Now it has a capability to cut out certain chapters of the movie, so you can put as many chapters of the main movie as possible without compression on the first disc, and put the rest is on the second disc. This way, CloneDVD doesn't actually transcode anything but simply splits the disc in two parts while keeping the original menu on both discs. Check the CloneDVD help for details on cutting the chapters.

There's no need to start a separate thread on the same problem. This is mostly an oranizational issue, it's a lot easier to deal with a problem if all of the advice and ideas are in one centalized location, rather than spread over multiple current threads. Any uncertainties that you may have in this area are probably covered by the Forum Rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).

You'll continue to receive support on your issue in this, a merger of the two threads; just keep providing feedback on the suggestions provided, and the results of your tests. Good luck!
