Changing VOB IDs to one ID to save space

I am backing up MASH with 8 episodes. Each episode has an identical Chapter 1. However, instead of pointing chapter one of each episode to ONE VOB ID to save space all episodes have a unique VOB ID for each Chapter 1 duplicating the chapter 8 times and wasting space...

If I can point each Chapter 1 to a single VOB ID and strip the other 7 IDs I will save 150MB off the disc making my DVD just within acceptable compression range to fit on a single disc and me very happy :D

So where do I start...? Does changing ID number with Menuedit do the trick...? Can this be done with DVDReMake...? Or am I smokin crack...?

That's why I posted this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72309&perpage=20&pagenumber=1). Thanks to jsoto for his efforts with VidChanger. It's still in beta stages though.

Keep in mind though that now you'll get a non-seamless transition (slight pause) between the modified chapters and the rest of the episode. This is the reason why they add a separate copy to each episode.

That would be ok in this case because there is a very slight fade out from the intro chapter (1) and a very quick fade in on chapter two (2)... a delay inbetween would seem normal as long as it is not forever...

I checked out thread and program... But confused... It is probably too simple but where do I tell the proggie I want VOB ID-10,-16,-22&-23 to all use VOB ID-1 while keeping everything else intact?

Currently, you can´t. VIDChanger works over a complete VTS.

@jsoto - Been working with your VOBBlanker just now... NICE.... Is it stable ? What has been the buzz about TitleSetBlanker with VOBBlanker seemingly so simple ?

And why is it so fast ? IFOEdit, VOBEdit, DVDReMake has to process everything... Even your ADDChapter tool just goes poof and it's done... I am happy but confused why no processing and mock stripping that other methods seem to need to employ ?

Blanking and replacing works fine in "simple VTSs". No issues known
Strip is not complete. As it is adviced in the dialog, Nav search pointers are not updated. It is needed a second pass for this job...
And why is it so fast ? Aha!!, you find it fast..
Well, different answers:
A) Do not do a mock stripping if you can avoid it. This is the way in which TitleSetBlanker or AddChapter work. Blanking the whole titleset allows to do not process the VOBs. AddChapter "appends" the new Cell/s to the existing VOB, so all the pointers inside IFO remain the same, you only need to add the new ones.
B) VOB process: Single pass instead two passes if you can do the job "on the fly". IFOEdit always uses two passes, because it always does all the job. But for blanking or replacing there is no need to update the Search pointers in Nav packs. AFAIK, only minor updates have to be done, and all of them can be done "on the fly".
C) Some programming care:
- Update progress bar only if the percentage has changed.
- Use block read/write functions (fread, fwrite) instead of character/byte read/write functions.

It can be done with 1.3.1. Just select "substitute block" when you right click on the block (in the PGC pane)

If I "substiture block" several times in the same DVD am I saving space? or does DVDReMake just duplicate the block for each instance when ReMakeing the DVD...?

My goal is to eliminate data by pointing all chapter ONE selections of a multi episode DVD to a single event.

Update: I upraded my MenuEdit account and got the full version of DVDReMake. Thanks for the upgrade program Dimad. Nice to be rewarded as a repeat customer. And I can't think of a time I got two great programs ANYWHERE for next to nada.

Additionally, I was able to answer my own question. The NEW "substitute block" command in fact just directs all blocks substituted to the same ID saving a ton of space on multi episode DVDs that use same opening chapter. This works nicely on ending credits too. Great example is CSI. I would never want to miss the great theme song that closes the show but now my DVD only has to carry the burden of one ending credit instead of 4 (one for each episode) Should add some serious output quality when it comes time for compression.
