DirectX version

I have an old notebook that I use to play movies, primarily xvid. Processor is a 333mhz Pent II, MMX and os is Windows 2000.

It currently has DirectX version 7.0 and has quartz.dll version 6.01. I'm using MPC 6.4.8.0 and ffdshow Feb 27, 2004.

It works fairly well at the moment, but playback is a bit slow or choppy at times. Would it be a good idea to update to the newest DirectX? How about just a newer quartz.dll? Any downside to trying? Other suggestions for improving performance (other than getting better hardware)?

I think it's always a good idea to have latest DirectX installed. The only problem is that you can't downgrade easily when somethings goes wrong.

Do always a system backup before installing a newer DirectX version... ;)

How big is your HD ???

You could make another partition n' copy your existing installation to it... ;)

Maybe yes, maybe not does not seem the best odds.

I have a total of about 160gb of disk, of which about 15gb is free

Guess I'll stick with the current version for a bit

Have you a "real" PC too ???

Then you could plug your Laptop to it n' copy all stuff this way !!!
