Solutions to Menu errors on Little House Seasons 3 thru 7!

I hate to admit it... (and it's for my wife OK) But I am trying to get Little House on the Prairie Season 3 Backed Up. I RIP all discs with DVDDecryptor... They all play fine but IFOEdit displays a Navigation Error after the FBI and Studio stuff. It occurs just as the Main Menu comes up. But I can close the error window and keep navigating menues just fine.

Commands in VMG are very simple and seem staight forward but all discs do this and I have made NO changes yet.

I think I ran into this with Disneys DUMBO but assumed it was something I did. Now I am not so sure.

Thoughts anyone...? Anyone else run this series...?

Have you tried DVD Tray Player Professional?
Its good at spotting authoring problems and has an Ifo Analyser + System / Gpreg display

It should be helpful for us to understand if you post the command table you find in VIDEO_TS.IFO VMGM_MAT\First Play PGC. Use ifoedit Copy2Clipboard button.
I think the error is there and I could try to identify and correct it.

Could you please append to the txt in your web site also the command tables of titleset 1 (VTS_01_0.IFO)? It should be necessary only the command table of the root menu but it's better that you post all of them.

In the txt in your web site there is no indication about which of the vts_1 PCG Menu corresponds to the root menu. However as far as I know, none of the commands used in any PGC Menu of vts_1 is illegal. So the ifoedit error window has, in my opinion, only one possible reason: one of the menu PGC is calling a legal command, using an illegal argument. I am not sure about that (I need to know which PGC Menu is the root menu one) but I think the cause of the error message can be one of the SetHL_BTN commands that are used with GPRM's arguments. I'm waiting for your indication about which PGC Menu is the root menu one. Is the error message coming when the root menu of titleset 1 displays?

The Main Menu is VIDEO_TS/PCG-Menu_1

The error occurs just as the main menu comes on... According to DVD Tray Player Pro it happens milli-seconds in front of menu.

It appears that VTS_1/PGC-Menu_1(root) VOB ID 1 = blank clip(no menu)

Hope that helps...

Pretty sad that I can't buy a set of DVDs from Hollywood that are programmed correctly.

I've asked Mark if he can capture the offending command in the log - that'll help - although a messyly authored DVD can be a nightmare to rectify we'll see if he can bring out a quick update to help here.
Anyway I'm glad the player has been usefull so far....

If the error comes up just before showing VIDEO_TS.ifo/PGC Menu 1 I think you can try changing something inside your VIDEO_TS.IFO. Proceed as follows:

1- back-up both VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP;
2- Now it's time for some command-replacing. To replace a command in ifoedit just double-click on the command you intend to replace and change the hex code you find here with the one I tell you.
Go to VIDEO_TS.ifo/PGC Menu 1 and replace the precommands as follows:
- Pre Command 2: (SetGPRMMD) Set GPRMMD<GPreg<2>> = (set-val) 0, [COUNTER](mf=0)
Replace 53 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 with 71 00 00 02 00 00 00 00
- Pre Command 3: (SetGPRMMD) Set GPRMMD<GPreg<4>> = (set-val) 0, [COUNTER](mf=0)
Replace 53 00 00 00 00 04 00 00 with 71 00 00 04 00 00 00 00
- Pre Command 4: (SetGPRMMD) Set GPRMMD<GPreg<5>> = (set-val) 0, [COUNTER](mf=0)

I love Mark's DVD Player. And I also think it could become a lot better if it would dump all the commands executed during play.

Nothing... Same error... Same Place... No affect at all...

I have included a GIF of the error pop-up here (http://posunplugged.com/littlehouse_s3_errmsg.gif) from DVD Tray Pro. It says "PGC = 0" is that right...? I just realized that I get the same or similar error if I press the play button from the main menu... It sure seems to be a problem in the commands between the ROOT of VTS_1 (blank clip) & the VIDEO_TS/PGC-Menu_1 (main menu)

Okay guys, I had a look at the files, and the error is caused by the first Pre command of the Title menu (VMG PGC1):
(SetHL_BTNN) Set Button Nr: GPreg<0>

GPRM0 is not defined at the time and probably set to 0 by default, which is invalid for a button number.

@geffroman: Insert this as a first command of the First Play PGC:
Set GPreg<0> mov (set-val)<1024> [71 00 00 00 04 00 00 00]

This will higlight the button 1. I also noticed that GPRM0 is not initialized anywhere else in VTS1 but instead highlighted buttons set directly in VTS1 menu PGCs. So there is a chance that to have your menu buttons highlighted properly you should just delete the offending command (SetHL_BTNN) Set Button Nr: GPreg<0> from the Title menu.

Just for a case, my other observation: Main menu (episode selection) here is the Title menu, which is apparently the only animated menu on the disc. You might have noticed in the DVD player log that the error comes right before changing the button selection without leaving VMG. Anyway, I don't really think that error would have affected playback on standalone.

This command highlights a specified menu button based upon its display mask. For more information, see usage of display mask, menu colors and palette.

The DVD specifications supports up to 36 menu buttons per display menu page. A button value of 0 indicates no highlight.


So, if dvd-replica is right, a value of 0 IS legal. Maybe dvd tray player and ifoedit have a little bug here.

I did not find the exact value you mentioned but I did find eight (8) instances of this command (4 for the episode menus & 4 for each episode's chapter menus). The only difference was the value was GPreg<2> & GRreg<4> consecutively. I received the same error on EVERY menu displayed.

NEW ISSUE- The removal of all four (4) commands (SetHL_BTNN) Set Button Nr: GPreg<2> corrected the error message for all episode menus. The removal of the first three (3) commands (SetHL_BTNN) Set Button Nr: GPreg<4> did in fact correct the error message for the chapter menus of first three (3) episodes.

However, a very strange thing occurs when I try to delete the last command (SetHL_BTNN) Set Button Nr: GPreg<4> in VTS-1/PGC-Menu_10. The command does NOT delete. I did it again and again. Delete Command does not work. Precommand count does NOT reduce. I can manually reduce precommands number but this only shifts last precommand to a postcommand.

Then I noticed more error messages when trying to play. What was working in 7 of the eight menus was now causing the episode menus to have two errors and episode menu was being bypassed to the chapter menu in the first three (3) episodes. The fourth (4th) episode button now will click but does not change menu at all.

I started comparing IFOs to see what went wrong. Not getting a precommand to delete should not cause another problem but DID. I found that every time I tried to delete precommand in VTS-1/PGC-Menu_10, IfoEdit was actually deleting a precommand in VTS-1/PGC-Menu_1 ! WOW, what's that about? Each time I thought IfoEdit was not deleting the precommand in PGC-Menu_10 I was viewing it was deleting a precommand in PGC-Menu_1 without my knowledge.

Final Solution - I deleted all 7 of the commands in VTS-1 (SetHL_BTNN) Set Button Nr: GPreg<x> that worked properly. In VTS-1/PGC-Menu_10 I edited the offending precommand to NOP. The END !

This is Season 3 of Little House. These problems where not apparent in Season 1 & 2. However, those discs did not even have chapter menus and the Title menu was in VTS_1. Structure was just different all around.Originally posted by P3gasus

The authoring on this disc doesn't seem to make much sense since the GPRMs used to highlight the buttons are not initialized.

I checked that Scenarist also gives a warning if you're trying set highlighted button number to 0, therefore we can trust that it's indeed not allowed. As I found out recently by digging deep into VOB file structure, a button must always be selected on a menu. Indeed, otherwise the player wouldn't know where to go when you press the arrow keys. A different case is when a button number is an optional argument for certain commands like LinkPGN x,button=hl_bn. In this case, zero value for the button means keeping currently highlighted button active.

As for IfoEdit, it happens sometimes that you can't add or delete commands. Occasionally, it starts working after restart. As you have already figured out, the easiest workaround is to change the command to NOP.

I can accept that IfoEdit sometimes can not complete a Delete command... But I am appauled that it would secretly delete commands in other PGC-Menus by mistake... That sounds like a huge IfoEdit problem to me... I have seen a lack of delete response before... I wonder how many times I was deleting commands in other PGC-Menus and just didn't know it...? I am wondering if IfoEdit just cannot discern the difference between a PGC-Menu_1 and PGC-Menu_10? Would adjustments to PGC-Menu_20 perform commands in PGC-Menu_2? and so on...

That sounds new to me. Indeed it's a big ifoedit problem. Thanks for reporting it. Probably the best solution if you need to delete a command is to save your ifo and try to delete it. If that doesn't work it's better to close ifoedit, reopen the ifo and replace the commands you want to delete with NOPs.

Yes IfoEdit gets memory problems (its getting old :) ) and can't grow the size of an IFO properly either if you add a lot of commands. Bummer, but up untill now its the only tool we've had to edit the commands all be it a pain to have to scroll down to them all the time.
DVDRemake offers command editing in the newest release so we'll see how usefull that is .... not sure if it wants to re output the lot though which wouldn't be usefull for the odd command change.

Hey guys we just got Little House Season 4. I was hoping they would have fixed their problems found and fixed by Dimmer from Season 3. However, First Play PGC Menu-1 causes an illegal command error in IfoEdit.

The files are different so the fix for Season 3 does not work. Hoping you guys can help again.

Yes, either that, or Post command 7 Break. Judging by the first six Post commands, they actually meant to store highlighted button number in GPRM3, so if it's not set, the player wouldn't know where to go after Break. It would probably be safer to insert as a first Pre command:

Yes, either that, or Post command 7 Break. Judging by the first six Post commands, they actually meant to store highlighted button number in GPRM3, so if it's not set, the player wouldn't know where to go after Break. It would probably be safer to insert as a first Pre command:

Laugh if you must... but we just got Season 7 and this too had an error in the menu. The tricks in this thread once again solved the problem.

I like to comment that SPRM(8) only holds a value that is a multiple of 1024. Upon insert of DVD, the default value of SPRM(8) is 1024. At any time, SPRM(8) cannot be any other value besides the ones listed below and that includes 0 (zero). The maximum number of buttons allowed in a PGC with buttons (menu) is 36.

sorry but i have to disagree with you on this. the only limit on players is that they must be able to play spec compliant material. they are not restricted to not playing out of spec stuff aswell.

if a dvd has illegal commands or bitstreams that go over spec max etc etc etc then it is the dvd that is breaking specs and not the player. if the player manages to handle/play such dvd then you are just lucky.

OK Gotcha... Well thats what this thread was all about.... A bad code job from Hollywood... and Dimmer showed me how to correct it... I thought maybe there was more to it... thanks for explaining it in more detail...

I bet none of you guys has ever wasted your time looking at these discs... But they are horrible... Bad code, video that looks like a bad copy of a home made VHS... sound is terrible... But my family loves Little House... what can I do..? :D

as 2COOL said, yes. a dvd compliant player is only required to play compliant material. how it handles out of spec stuff is up to the manufacturer. it could completely stop, it could reject back to the menu, it could ignore bad commands and continue. so while these dvds may play fine on 1 player they may not on another, you have no guarentee.

I also went into details on your other DVD (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89150&highlight=prairie). That one also had SPRM(8) being set as 0 and then setting a GPRM.
