hi everybody!
could someone plese help me understand this:
I prepared a 3d title animation and rendered it as an avi file.I imported it to vegas for rendering.i did the redering using the dvd pal format with buttom field first than with upper field first than with progressive type.
I noticed that the one rendered as progressive is the best by far and the fastest to render.now is this normal?
-if i will add this animated title to a dv file from my digital camera and used the same type of rendering will it give me the same best results or should i use field order(interlacing)for dv files.and is there a better solution for this .thanks for every information

DV is an interlaced medium. The video you retreive off of your camera is interlaced. Computers have progressive displays. I imagine you'll output this back to a tape to be played on a TV? If so make sure Vegas is setup for DV and export your 3D interlaced as well. I believe DV is upper field first. You may be able to export as progressive and just let Vegas handle the interlacing. Actually that may be your best bet. Since inserting a clip at a place where it's expecting a bottom field, but receives an upper field will cause nasty results.
DV may be interlaced or progressive. Most camcorders unfortunately don't support progressive scan, though (mine does). Rendering progressive material in progressive mode is the best way to go, of course. Another question arises, when you want to mix progressive and interlaced sources in a single project. In that case you'd have to do the final rendering in interlaced mode. As inserts are done on a frame, not field basis, the problem Klinky describes should not occur.

I've heard of some DV cams that telecine their footage. Is this how they acheive progressive capture? I would think capturing progressive @ 29.97 would seem odd.. :scared: ;)

DV interlaced is bottom field first - interlaced NTSC DVD is upper field first...there are some DV video cameras that can capture progressive @ 30p(30 progressive fps) but the footage is a bit choppy. this feature is mainly used to freeze your video to capture stills since still interlaced footage has the combing effect, progressive footage is frame based not field based so it wont matter what field first you render as if you go progressive...
to get true progressive you will need a camera that captures at 24p (23.976fps). if your camera can only capure at 30i(29.976fps) and you want to achieve the "24p film look" than you may want to set your shutter at 1/30 and output to 24p with your NLE. for animations than its better to stay progressive since it looks and compresses better.
