DVD Audio question

Sorry I finally get it. I thought the slashdot headline was jumping the gun. DVD will have pre-ripped versions of the Losslessly encoded DVD Audio section in a DVD-ROM section so they can control what will be traded online, probably something like -tape or -qvbr 1 AAC files. They might even just be two channel files. That might be left open to the record company.



Will DVD audio have a lossless version also? 65min 2 chans 44100hz = about 650 mb right?

650*(480/441)*(5/2)= 1768 megabytes. 1768 megabytes FOR LOSSLESS Linear PCM!
Is the extra .1 channel another whole channel? WHOA AN EXTRA 294 kilobytes per second! OMFG!!!!

Please, oh please tell me they are including lossless copies as well as those AAC files.
Heck, they could include MP3@320 Ogg@350 AAC@256/channel WMA9, MP2, MP1, QDESIGN, two-channel pcm for
compatibility, and every other format in existence.

Well.. the lossless part is encrypted. They're using a higher sampling rate and a larger sample size (I believe up to 96Hz and 24 bits/sample, but I might be mistaken.. I'm really not the audio guy), so essentially anything that is below those specifications is lossy as downsampling is a lossy process. What you can get out of the digital output is a regular CD quality output (PCM, 44.1Hz sampling rate and 16 bits/sample), but that is obviously already lossy when compared to the original.

When specs were created they speak of "up to 192KHz, 24Bit".
But existent disks are 96/24, as I know...

It's 24-bit 192Khz PCM for stereo content, and 24-bit 96Khz MLP for multi-channel content iirc. Then they can use images for let's say lyrics and etc, not video though. And just so that the discs play on regular DVD players so people don't complain too much, they added a ROM part that contain the same music selection in either AC-3 (Dolby Digital) in or DTS in 16-bit (I think) 48Khz and a few have 24-bit 96Khz DTS, depending on the record company.

The DVD-Audio part is strongly encrypted and it has to be played using analog outputs, no optical/coaxial digital here. The only way to use digital outputs is the iLink (IEEE 1394-Firewire) but only a few high-end systems have this interface. Same goes for SACD. And if I'm not mistaken if the title has DTS 24/96, it only outputs 48khz through the digital outputs (yea, I know...I hate it too). Well, that's about what I know. ;)

grrr. and i bet it doesn't brickwall filter it before downsampling. aliasing galore.

i'd be happy with analog outs though... i've only got a stereo amp from the early '80s after all.
