Deinterlacing Spirited Away (or any other movie of asian origin it seems)

I've tried to make Xvid of Friends (a korean movie) and Spirited Away.

However both dvds seem to be interlaced. I've tried to counter this with Decomb but no matter what config i try the result seems jerky and in the end doesn't really remove the interlacing. Are there any better deinterlacers or general howto's for deinterlacing?

These seem to be "hybrid DVD"'s however in difference to the other thread these are PAL.

(yes, i'm plugging them cause they're cool and my friend does authoring for them... they're using avisynth now :))

the copy you have is probably field-blended unnecessarily, or perhaps run off a betacam tape and in the process had a field dropped, leading to field-shifted frames.

telecide can handle these, i believe there's a case of field shifted PAL in the decomb docs.

Yeps and Telecide and PAL fieldshifting is what i tried :)

And still the result sucked.

If you're dealing with a PAL release, you're right; it sucks. I examined a rental version of Spirited Away, and it was beyond repair. Blends, interpolates, and interlacing all over the place. From what I saw, the best way to deal with it is use sstmc which biases to the motion of the first field and takes all the detail from the second it can get, downsize to a low res like 640x to hide the artifacts, and live with the blends and choppiness.

By the way Mug Funky, speaking of Madman, would you think your friend could interest them in licensing EVA Revival (http://www.evangelion.co.jp/) and release it as a frame-sped progressive PAL release? That'd clear their name forever :D. Also, having it around WITH subtitles is just awesome in itself, as I've not heard about any plans from ADV to re-release it.
(Hell, I could author a HDTV release from the DVD alone - not to mention what I could do with the original high-res digital telecine)

a re-release sounds like a good idea, and it's not unprecedented.

they've re-released GITS movie 3 times i think. unfortunately i got the first one, which is basically the UK one with the region codes changed.

there's also a re-release of ninja scroll (without the lame censored bits), but that suffered a tad in fast scenes due to having so many soundtracks to fit into 10mbps (DTS is your friend:))

there's certainly a lot of eva fans around.

I've seen the original early-nineties airing of Transformers here in NL, and from what I remember of it, it was analog all the way, indicating 24 only (perhaps some NTSC overlays which your beloved friend could deinterlace to PAL25p). Concerning the series now, I don't think I'd want to touch it with a 10ft pole to be honest. I'd rather encode my 7yr-old Pokemon VHS tapes for laughs than do anything with Transformers.

I think I shudder in relief that I live in NTSC land. I can get away with very simple scripting functions on asian DVDs and get away with it. Just a simple decimation with decomb from 29.976 to 23.976fps, I can still use fielddeinterlace(blend=false) and clean it with tomsmocomp afterwards, or use kerneldeint, or just let decomb deinterlace with post=2. Nothing major to worry about.

hehe. if i'm really desperate for a good source, i'll obviously get the NTSC ones... they're not difficult to get in PAL land.

and if IVTC were a simple matter of decimating to 23.976, there'd be no need of converterboxes. believe me, you're not going to get pleasing results with 30p and 30i pans if you're decimating to 23.976

of course there's no issue with spirited away (or any other _cinematic_ release) as these will never have video content in them, and thus be clean 23.976.

this assumes that all telecines are perfect, and a simple search of this forum shows there are big problems in NTSC land as well :)

in fact, film releases are usually better to get in PAL, with the exception of titles that involve re-encoded ac-3. ac-3 is _not_ a good standard IMHO, and transcoding lossy-lossy is a bad idea even with a good codec (can anybody spell "pre-echo"?)

I just got my hands on Transformers Volume 1 DVD (PAL) and I´m trying to get back to propper fullframes. After a view tries if found the material very strange interlaced, sometimes it looks like telecined, sometimes every second frame in interlaced.
Any suggestion what tool or method will do the job?? I would even take the time to cut it into little snipplets and apply different methods on every piece.
(I want it for VJing)
If needed (and allowed) I could post some small snipplets to show what I mean.

Sorry to resurrect again, but, to Mug Funky: do you mean to say Madman re-released Spirited Away?

I owned the Australian R4 version in 2003 and it was field-blended. Did they re-do it properly?
