I started to learn more about CCE with the release of DVD-RB. I was thinking about which tools to use for best results. So I came up with this guideline for myself:
1 - 10% compression - use DVDshrink
11- 40% compression - use CCE
41%+ split to two discs
Any thoughts?

Such guidelines will never work, there is no rule of a thumb. It completely depends on the source, so always make a compressibility test, and handle each movie individually.

You're both right. It's good to use rules to live by (it makes life easier), but there are exceptions to every rule.
Personally my rules are a little different:
1% - 15% - use DVDShrink
15% - 35% - try DVDShrink, split if quality too low
>35% - just split disk
Occasionally I'll get lazy and just split the disk even for 20%.

I use DVDShrink and set the video for 4gig space, then i have ~700mb left for audio. Compress to AC3 and I have my perfect DVDR5. Worked for me with the last once i've made.
