What is YUV2?

Searching Doom9's forums for the term "YUV2" I got 223 results. But YUV2 is mentioned neither at www.fourcc.org nor at Microsoft's site.

So what the heck is "YUV2"? Is it just "YUY2" misspelled? Is it a generic term for "YUV 4:2:2" or "YUV 4:2:0"? Is it a valid term anyway?

It's YUY2 misspelled.

In most cases (if not all), it is just a misspelled YUY2.

However, I can imagine that some people use it as a generic term for "YUV 4:2:2", although I haven't seen anybody doing it.

If it is possible to choose more than one Huffyuv codec, make sure you choose the one for the data format you just entered in the previous step (e.g., YUY2). You should start with "Predict median (best)" from the "YUV2 compression method" drop down menu and if that doesn't work, because of a lack of disc space or dropped frames, you should gradually step down the quality ladder, by choosing a lower quality setting in from the drop down menu.

If it is possible to choose more than one HuffYuv codec, make sure you choose the one for the data format you just entered in the previous step (e.g., YUV2).Curiously, the quote uses both "YUY2" and "YUV2", and it's immediately followed by a screenshot that says "YUY2".

YUV is a generic catchall for both YUY2 and YV12. Both because they look similiar and because they are related to each other, when a typo occurs it is usually not caught. When a mistake is make often enough, it beomes a synonym rather that a mistake. Nevertheless there is no such thing and YUY2 is spelt that way because the samples are in YUYV order. Remember to substitute the final V for a 2 and you have the correct name.
