View Full Version : Splitting dvd9 with ifoedit

Im sure you have all covered this millions of times, but ive read through two different procedures on how to split dvd9's to two dvdr's, one here at doom9, and another random site.
Here is my issue. Lets say the movie is on VTS_04 vob's. Ifoedit splits in two disc 1 and disc 2, which then contains the VIDEO_TS.ifo, bup, and vob, and also the VTS_04_xy.VOB, IFO, BUP. I read about VTS_01 being the titleset so I copied it over. When I try to open the dvd there are issues. With dvdshrink i can tell the problem is that its looking for the other VTS_xy files that were in the original. So i usually copy over all the extras and menus to both directories. But sometimes they become to big.
Ive tried using the GET VTS SECTORS on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. I dont know where im going wrong, but im following the procedure exactly. Something is always pointing to the other vob files that I dont think i need on both discs.
Can someone explain where my problem lies? I really appreciate any help. Ive searched and searched, and there is so much info but cant find anything that explains how to fix this

let me also say that the one procedure i followed mentioned letting the dvd play in ifoedit til the movie starts and then exiting to see which titlesets have played. It said for example TITLE 1, and i think it even mentioned which vob set that points to. I tried to copy over only those vob's that the titlesets point to, still no luck. It still asks for other vob's.

I would at first copy all referenced ifo/vob files and then replace vobs I don't need with blank cells. You may also need to adjust menu commands after you blank out vobs. There are excellent 2COOL's guides here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=43142) for what you need.

thanks for the response, i actually checked out his link. Unfortunately, all the cell, and pgc talk and all loses me. I know enough to rip a dvd, split it with all vob's in both directories as long as its small enough and burn it. i only use ifoedit, dvd decrypter, and dvdshrink.
as far as ifoedit, i only know to do what the procedure says. Beyond that i get lost.
I tried to follow some of hte links on the link you gave me, but its all over my head.

You should not be running the GET Sectors command on VIDEO_TS.IFO, you should be running it on either VTS_01_0.IFO or VTS_04_0.IFO. It does not matter which one you use.
My assumptions are as follows:
1. it sounds like you now have a VIDEO_TS folder that contains:
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_04_0.IFO
VTS_04_0.VOB
VTS_04_0.BUP
VTS_04_1.IFO
VTS_04_1.VOB
VTS_04_1.BUP
And possibly some addition VTS_04_x files
2. When you attempt to launch the Play button in IFOEDIT are you getting "Illegal Instruction Executed"? If so, you are referencing a Title that does not exist in your directory. Other things can cause the error, however, it does not sound like you have edited any of the PGC or VOB commands that would generate an illegal instruction. You have several options for rectifying this. You can copy the missing VTS files into the directory, assuming you still have enough space to do so. You can use a tool like titlesetblanker to reduce the size and make them fit if they won't. You can determine where the titleset is being called and change the command.
My suspicion is that DVDShrink wants a 100% compliant video structure. You cannot be missing any title sets or it will wretch. It is unclear to me why you are splitting a disc that you are then going to put through DVD Shrink....what EXACTLY, do you want to end up with as a final result....one or two discs? If you want only one disc, why split it prior to going through DVDshrink? If you want two discs, why use DVDshrink at all?

"You should not be running the GET Sectors command on VIDEO_TS.IFO, you should be running it on either VTS_01_0.IFO or VTS_04_0.IFO. It does not matter which one you use."
This could be my problem possibly, but let me explain more.
"My assumptions are as follows:

VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_04_0.IFO
VTS_04_0.VOB
VTS_04_0.BUP
VTS_04_1.IFO
VTS_04_1.VOB
VTS_04_1.BUP"
That is correct
From this point, I was opening the VIDEO_TS.IFO and running the GET VTS SECTORS, from the response of IFOEDIT, it looked to me that it was adjusting all the IFO files that needed, including VTS_01 and VTS_04. I was only opening in DVDSHRINK at this point to ensure that a full working fileset was within the VIDEO_TS folder. If there isnt, dvdshrink tells you. I suppose pressing play in IFOEDIT would do the same? I havent used that, other than playing the movie to see which titles were played up until the movie starts. I also tried copying those vob's into the folder.
"2. When you attempt to launch the Play button in IFOEDIT are you getting "Illegal Instruction Executed"? If so, you are referencing a Title that does not exist in your directory. Ok, i want two discs in the end for movies that are too big to fit on one. I would rather not compress more than 8-10% with dvdshrink. So I split them with IFOEDIT, and like i said, im only using dvdshrink to ensure a full movie set is there and everything is good. So, I can copy all vob's in to that directory as long as they are small enough, which i have been doing. Almost Famous, for example, is too big for this method. So I tried playing the movie and only copying over those vob's referenced in the beginning. No luck.
All im trying to do essentially is split a large movie to two discs. Its too large to copy all the leftover vob's into both directories, and thats the only way ive been successful doing this. So I either need the TITLESETBLANK tool you mentioned, but id rather only copy in the vob's i need and figure out how to adjust it something so it doesnt look for the other vob's. I really appreciate the help on this

Unfortunately for you, the only practical way for doing this is to re-author 2 discs from scratch. If you are familiar with authoring tools you may go that way, but I believe it's much easier to just strip/blank things out (meaning replace unwanted original contet with blank cells). I would go re-authoring route only if I found that dvd navigation structure was so complicated that I have to browse through dozens of PGCs to change pre/post commands etc, which sometimes takes a lot of time.

As violao has articulated, splitting a disc is not an exact science. Many in this forum started where you are at and have learned far more about a DVD's structure than they originally intended. For example, why 2Cool is not working as a DVD author for some major firm is beyond me. I suspect he knows more about DVD's than many who actually code them. We are incredibly lucky to have people like 2cool, mpucoder and Dimad around.
You are on the right track, however, I would suggest that you continue to experiment but stick with Ifoedit to split your discs. A link to ssh's titleblanker tool is in this forum as well. Use the Play button in Ifoedit to determine if your disc will do what you want as it tends to catch errors and problems fairly well.
After splitting the disc, once it will play reliably in Ifoedit, you are usually safe to move it to DVD. I do all my ripping with DVDdecrypter, all of my disc splitting using Ifoedit, menuedit and titleblanker. I create the image using imgtool and burn it with nero. I have yet to find a disc I could not split and get to behave the way I wanted, most being an improvement over the way the disc came. Some are considerably harder to re-author than others, but that is part of the fun.

part of the fun eh? i must have missed that part. thanks again though for the help. Ill try that titleblanker. Does it just leave the vob but delete all the data or something so that it fits on both discs? that may be the way to go. I do like the fact that you can make disc 2 jump right to the movie with ifoedit. thats about all the further i want to learn these pgc's and pre commands. these things are complicated
thanks again guys

Titleblanker does just that...leaves the vob but for all intensive purposes, empties the contents so it can still be placed on the disc. As is pointed out in the current titleblanker thread, two bugs currently exist that shh needs to address around the duration of a cell and missing time map information for a PGC. On some stand alone players you may have an issue when the unit comes to a blanked titleset.

@riprazr - Why is that...? It gets sectors for all no matter which IFO you have open...?
@poster72 - Why not just use Shrink to reduce all EXTRAS to Still Pics on the Movie Disc... and have the movie intact... Put the EXTRAS on a second disc and SHRINK the movie to Still PICs to make that happen...
You end up with a movie and bonus disc...

good idea, but most of the time the movie wont fit on one disc alone. i dont really like the idea of compressing the movie much. in fact, i have no concerns with bonuses/extras usually, but some movies wont even fit one disc.

If I recall correctly, Get Sectors must be run on a titleset file, not the VIDEO_TS file, although I may be mistaken.

Well then it gets even easier... Use DVDSHRINK to do a REAUTHOR... Select the movie title only... and use the "Start/End Frame" tool to cut the movie in half... You won't be compressing the movie at all... First you run it keeping the first half of the movie... Then you run it again for the second half... DVDShrink will strip all the unwanted audio and subtitles and build all new IFO files for you for a perfectly structured 2 DVD set...
You can even add a prebuilt Insert Disc Two To Continue... (http://posunplugged.com/vobclips) video clip to the end of the first disc in the process without ANY complicated IFOEdit steps... DVDSHRINK will handle that too... Just stop by our website (http://posunplugged.com/vobclips) and check out the Free Clips (http://posunplugged.com/vobclips) and the NEWBIE GUIDE that explains the process using DVDSHRINK...
QUICK and simple... especially because since you won't be compressing it won't even need to run the lengthy deep anylization step... and you can send the data right to your burner... COOL...

It doesn't matter which IFO file you open.
