Old vhs, copy of a copy of a copy, and so on, and color smearing

Hi. I am capturing some vhs' that are like 4th generation copies of somethings recorded back in like 1990. It was copied for me using a JVC S9900 with tbc. Aparently the tbc did its job because i could capture it without 1 frame dropped, but im having major problems with color smearing (chroma noise i guess is what its called, mostly in red and blue scenes. It is also not very bright either due to the degredation, but i increased the the brightness a tad during capture. The tape lacks detail by quite a bit, but i want to try my best to clean it up. There isnt hardly any temporal noise, just that color noise. Any ideas on how to reduce it?

Nevermind I think I may have it toned down pretty well. I captured it with the color saturation cut almost in half to where there is just enough color to please the eye but not enough to smear all over the place. With that in conjunction with cnr2 and convolution3d I think it may look pretty decent.

I am also interested in doing repairs of this nature. Is anyone aware of a utility that can shift only the chroma while leaving the luma intact?

I know of image shifters, but they apply to everything. It would be nice to move them seperately.

Would virtualdub with the flaxen VHS filter help you out here. You can shift chroma along the horizontal and vertical axis to get it to match the luma.
