Hello from Athens, Greece!

I have a few remarks (**-) to share with you and a few questions (#*#) to make. So, here it goes:

**- I am using AutoGK 1.00 under Win2000-sp4-Pro/IE5.5sp2/DirectX9.0b (P4 2.4, 512 MB RAM) and I was very happy when I made two perfect copies of one of my favorite DVD's with very good quality (DivX: 2x700 MB in 3 hours / XviD: 2x700 MB in 5,5 hours) without ANY adjustments - Gordian Knot was scary when I first tried it but AutoGK looks pretty simple to use...
...which means that MANY hours were dedicated to this project - keep up the VERY GOOD work, everybody!
My remark is that AutoGK performs OK with HyperThreading enabled under Windows 2000 (...HT IS working with Win2000!) and that there is no need for "Win98 compatibility mode".

**- I tried a fresh Win-installation without HT AND compatibiliy mode enabled: the results were more or less the same, so you do not have to alter the AutoGK ReadMe/Tutorial ;-)

#*# I also installed K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.00 only because I did not find any other codec pack documented to include -among others- DivX Pro 5.1.1 encoder/decoder. OK, I know that you are not encouraging codec-pack-installations, but there are many users who use these. With this pack I experienced a few errors while working with AutoGK, but they all gone when I re-installed AutoGK. My question is this: is it possible for you to post a few guidelines ("install X because..." "do not install Y unless..." "uninstall Z to avoid..."), just like the K-Lite guys have done with Nimo codec pack a long long time ago? (I have their offline FAQ's but I cannot find them online to post the link...)

#*# Is it possible for you to suggest a codec pack to work with AutoGK and leaves no need for other codecs - with the "dummy user" in mind? I know about Gordian Knot Codec Pack but it is not updated since 5-May-2003... Is it correct to install only the codecs included at GK Codec Pack from K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (...with Media Player Classic & BSPlayer)?

Note that I am not in the trip of "THIS codec is better than THAT codec", but I am VERY serious in "THIS codec does not mess my system with spyware/watermarks/etc... instead of THAT codec" :-)

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hi nemos, Welcome to Doom9 forum!

First of all make up your mind on codec packs, they are evil: don't use it. Then think of objective of the work you are doing with autogk, which is obviously backing up DvD into DivX/XviD. Then you want to watch them on the PCs you own, Ok..right?

As autogk is only supporting DivX/XviD, you only need them to be installed in your encoding machine. No other codecs are needed. If you always use DivX then install DivX only otherwise XviD only. Both support decoding each other.

At the time of playback you may need some filters ( They are not codecs ) like ac3filter, ogg vorbis filter etc. Install only the required ones. Installing all the filters cannot give you better quality.

if you are a MediaPlayerClassic fan then you don't need any new filters other than the codec itself...all of them is inbuilt in mpc.

Hope that helps...

Thanks a lot for the response :-))

The problem is that we are doing many things regarding video/music/images/etc. in our PCs, so it is obvious that we need many support files (codecs, runtime modules, etc.) that we do not know if they exist in our system or not... until we need them and we find them missing! I cannot forget a couple of years ago that I spend DAYS online trying to find out why my brand-new-Win-installation could not recognize half of my video collection! -...issue solved with Nimo Codec Pack...-

By now there is a pretty nice utility called GSpot that provides info about missing codecs but it does not support all video formats... so I have this request: could someone point to me which audio/video codecs are needed for encoding with AutoGK, plus decoding mpeg/avi/wmv formats?

Thanks in advance for your time to support this newbie!

you might be better off to uninstall the nemo pak it known to cause problem. install matroska packs (http://packs.matroska.org) but get a updated ffdshow from the 'other codecs' section of this forums. these wont give you problem and are tested
