Hello,
I have read the instructions .I used the utility (vobsub) in Gknot to encode the first stream of subtitles. I did not highlight anything, or move the english subtitle stream over to theleft side box. It ran and I was left with the two output files, one text, the other the subtitles.
I went through all the computations, put the subtitles in the Files section of Bitrate part, and included the Vobsub stream titles in the save.avs popup.
I tried to save it but it crashed out. I then read you have to name all the files the same, so I did that and it still crashed.
Can I add the subtitles in after I process the movie? How? I prefer to do it this way. I usually use a one pass processing, and then add in the audio track with Nandub. Can I still add in the subtitles after processing the audio with nandub. Please help as soon as possible as I have a time limit on what I am working on.

I'm trying to install vobsub and it wants a path for avi.util? What is that it does not exist on my system!!! I tried to run the subtitle filter and it wont let me load it, it never lets me off the load subtitle area, and when i quit it the filter is not added. helppp!!! I am going to try and re-encode the movie now that vobsub is on computer, but will not going through the avi.util part make it not work???

Hi-

...put the subtitles in the Files section of Bitrate part...

Don't do that unless you intend to save the subs externally and play them through DirectVobSub. If you intend to "burn" them into the movie, it's not necessary.

I tried to save it but it crashed out.

I don't know why that would happen, unless it relates to you trying to install the AviUtil plugin (which you shouldn't do unless you have and use AviUtil, which you don't really need for anything).

I then read you have to name all the files the same,

That's only necessary if you intend to save the external VobSubs for play through DirectVobSub.

Can I add the subtitles in after I process the movie?

Not to the video. At that point you can only play external subs.

Can I still add in the subtitles after processing the audio with nandub.

Again, after the video has been encoded, there's no way to add the subs onto the video, without reencoding.

I'm trying to install vobsub and it wants a path for avi.util?

Uncheck the VobSub for AviUtil box. You don't need it.

Thanks, I have gotten the filters to install, but i am unsure which file to pick the, idx file, or the sub file. There was no indication of the type of file so i typed in .idx and .sub after the name of the movie. Will this mess up the recognition of the file? I ran the converter again and it did not crash. I also noticed two more filters were added to the process in lower left hand corner. Yet I had no subtitles so I am running it again using the idx file as the vobsub file. Hope this works!!! Thank you for your prompt response!!!!

Also i guess I should be using two pass encoding? If i use one pass and it leaves out the audio, then its leaving out the subtitles too?

Hi-

i am unsure which file to pick the, idx file, or the sub file.

I'm not sure it makes any difference, but I always pick the idx.

There was no indication of the type of file so i typed in .idx and .sub after the name of the movie. Will this mess up the recognition of the file?

I don't understand. If you got the subs OK out of VobSub configure, then they're already named with the idx and sub extension, and you don't have to mess with them at all (no renaming, or changing extensions or anything). If you're having problems with the subs, then maybe start over with the VobSub Configure. If you changed the name to MovieName.idx and MovieName.sub (there are 2 sub files-make sure you renamed the right one), then that shouldn't make any difference.

Also i guess I should be using two pass encoding?

GKnot only works with 2 pass encoding. What are you doing to get a playable first pass .avi? Are you saving the first pass XviD .avi?

If i use one pass and it leaves out the audio, then its leaving out the subtitles too?

Again, GKnot is for 2-pass encoding. However, before doing the encoding, make sure that the subs are in there. Either run the Preview, or open the .avs in VDubMod and check to make sure.

Here's Doom9's guide for creating the subs:

http://www.doom9.org/dvobsub.htm

It's mostly for making subs for external display, but the principle is the same.

And if you want something easier, you might give AutoGK a try:

Hello,
Well im back to square one. I erased the sub and idx files and tried to recapture them. it will not come up with the select pgc screen. Yet it works for the second file I want to do!!
I reinstalled the entire gordian knot program and now I am at the point where when I go to burn the video and have chosen the vobsub idx file, it crashes me out. Runs for a second then stops. Should i install vobsub again, or am i missing out on some settings that need to be made in the configuration area. I hope this thread is pointing out all the holes in the Guide, this is the hardest thing to figure out so far!!!! I have read the Guides but to no avail. Any step by step instructions appreciated!!!!!!

Ohh and about the one pass encoding. I just switch it to first pass, and when the first pass is done there is the file, it ends and I go to Nandub to add the directstream copy of the audio ac3. I like it cause it really cuts down the processing time!!!! Dont ask me how but it works!!!

I am using the Ati File Player 7.1 or so. Maybe I cannot see the subtitles because of the ATI player? Mann I really dont know.

Also I cannot figure out why I should be using the idx file in the initail compressions area. Isn't all the information in the .sub area of the file? alot of questions, anyone make sense of all this and have any answers. Fire away im all ears and fingers

Hi-

...it crashes me out. Runs for a second then stops.

Did you take my suggestion and run the Preview, or open the .avs in VDubMod before encoding to make sure the subs were there? You have a bad .avs most likely. It may be sub related, or it may not be sub related. But if you did one of the things I suggested and it was a bad .avs, you'd get a message to help pinpoint the problem.

Ohh and about the one pass encoding. I just switch it to first pass, and when the first pass is done there is the file

Which codec are you using? XviD, Divx 3.11, or DivX 5.x.x?

I am using the Ati File Player 7.1 or so.

Use a real player-BS Player, Zoom Player, or Media Player Classic.

Isn't all the information in the .sub area of the file?

No, they work together. The idx has all the timestamps, and the font, colors, size, positioning and other information.

And post your .avs. Leave off all the lines beginning with "#", since they don't do anything.
