View Full Version : Nero copy "reading" versus DVDDecrypter

How come when I use DVDDecypter to do an .ISO read of an already backed up DVD, it takes 14-15 minutes to read the DVD-R and create the .ISO file..
But in NERO when I do choose disc-copy in and select NOT on-the-fly, it only takes 3 minutes to read the disc to the HDD before writing starts.
I guess my question is - What does NERO do differently to DVDDecrypter. They are both reading the same amount of data (4.37GB) from the same disc from the same DVD drive.
One take 15 minutes and one takes 3 minutes.
There is NO decryption required to be done by DVDDecrypter as its already a backed up DVD.
Thanks Tim...

3 minutes... that's physically impossible. Nero is lying to you.
It would have to be reading at about 18x - 19x to read that amount of data in that time period.

This is what made me think "Something is not right here.."
But I sat and watched it (Nero) race along and "read" the whole DVD in a few seconds over 3 minutes at reported speeds up to 40,000KB / sec.
Then when it finished that, it started burning to the DVD-R.
(reason I chose not to use on-the-fly method was because I was using my PC for some other things at the same time and didn't want to risk it "choking" when burning the DVD)
Weird. The finished DVD-R didn't play properly in my lounge room Pioneer stand alone. BUT that could be either the fact that this was a new brand of DVD-R's I just bought and have not used before, OR something to do with the "original" backed up disk.
Because when I tried to do an .ISO read (after realising that Nero is playing games and gave me a coaster) it (DVDDecrypter 3.2.1.0) had an unrecoverable read error. (that "original" backed up DVD still plays fine and is watchable start to finish, I just can't make a copy of it)
Not terribly fussed about the whole thing. Time to move on. More just curious about the actions of Nero.
Will stick to the ever reliable DVDDecrypter from now on.. :)

You might find Nero was able to use 'cached' data and so wasnt actually reading from the drive.
Unless you buy top quality DVDR discs, it's common that you cant read them back in full. That will probably explain your unrecovered read error.
