DVD-Rs for 29 cents!!!

I saw them at Frys. The brand was GQ, as far as I know, a crappy make, but even if they are made by Princo, I wouldn't mind 1 in 20 bad DVD's for that price. I'll try to find an online link.

I stood in line at the new store opened in Concord yesterday. I'm trilled now that I can now get to a Fry's in 15 minutes.

Anyway, I picked up a pack of 25 for 7 bucks. After seeing this post, I got curious to check the label. It shows LEADDATA01 and 4x write rated.

If they work great, if not no big deal to return them and get my money back. I'll just make sure to perform verify write on these discs. I swore I would never buy crap discs again but got suckered into this buy.

So far I burned two, both fine. What I did discover is most of the discs are LEADDATA (4x) but four are OPTODISC-MR1 (2x).

I'll post more results here.

The real reason this discs are only 29c will become apparent in 3-6 months time when the discs are no longer readable due to poor quality.

Or the other reason could be that Frys had a grand opening and had a sale on a lot of their items to attract attention.

They still can be ok quality. For example, I can usually get Memorex DVD-R's for 50 cents each with rebate from office max. To date, they all have lasted (I bought my first pack in October)

I guess I have to wait 1 more month to see if the DVD's fail. What I'm getting to is, that you can find good quality DVD's for >50 cents, and Frys probably had a sale on one of those brands.

As reported by the internal media label, they are LEADATA discs, "OK" nothing great. The 29 cent deal was one day only and certainly a comeon to get people in. They also had Sharp 25" TV for $99 bucks. I just laughed as I checked out - I swear 75% of the carts had a TV hanging out of it!

Nearly each ad since the opening price has been rising on the discs; yesterday's ad shows them at a buck apiece, no deal at all.

So far no coasters.

At least they are better than the GQ discs that are a buck each.

GQ is the worst make of all time.

They are GQ on the cakebox but are LEADDATA discs based on the media code burned onto the discs. There is no GQ oem, they are just reselling other OEM discs.

Oh, but as we can see, GQ is selling a mixture of brands, so I probably can't trust them too much. They suck for hardware though.

:rolleyes: Leaddata CDRs were about the worst CDRs I've ever had in my life (it was CDRs and it was about 5 years ago, but anyways...)
Every one of those CDRs was unreadable about a year after burning. I guess that's why I'd never buy anything again that says "Leaddata" ...

UPDATE - BEWARE (if you weren't already)

Those optodiscs in the batch of GQ DVD-R were crap. I burned and verified each disc on one PC then played them back on another HTPC system. The discs started skipping about half way through. I decided I had better reburn them and threw the coaster in the bin.

Even though the leaddata discs seem to play fine so far, I'm not buying nor using these cheapies anymore, even for free. Having been burned before by crap discs, I feel like I'm standing in the shit again and gonna get burned.

This isn't good news... I bought some of these from Fry's for about $1 a piece last month. So far I havn't seen any problems burning, and they load up in my ps2. I guess time will tell.

my pioneer 105 with firmware 1.33 burns krap media fine,

my BTC 1008 burns KRAP DVD MEDIA fine ONLY AFTER UPDATING THE FIRMWARE

my pioneer 105 with firmware 1.33 burns krap media fineI have tested some DVD-Rs with my Pioneer 106 using Nero CDSpeed (surface scan). However I think the Pioneer burner reads every CD/DVD perfectly (even the most scratched CDs) - but that doesn't mean every other player will read them...
