Wierd problem with MP3 audio

I'm playing back a file encoded in DivX. The audio layer is MPEG Layer 3. The audio comes out in pops and something like ringing, and I could VERY faintly hear the original audio. It's very low, and sounds like very bad VCR tape. Can I fix this, or is this too late because it was encoded badly?

I'm taking the liberty of changing your title from "DivX" audio to "MP3" audio, and moving this to the Audio forum.

Demux the audio, decode some of it to WAV ( a few seconds with LAME ), then test. If it plays fine, I would say something is wrong with one of your decoders somewhere. If still garbled, I'd say it's the source
