View Full Version : Two subtitles at different positions

Let's say that I have an movie in avi format which is 16:9.
I want to put two selectable subtitles in the same language but at different positions. First subtitle to be displayed on the black border and the second on the movie image.
In D2S I can only select one position which have the same value for both. I tried to edit for example the en1-1.sub in notepad and entering the desired value for that position, but when I use the Recover function from DVD Authoring, my edited en1-1.sub is deleted and replaced with new one with the settings from D2S.
hmmm... or that I want is not possible?

Hi, r6d2!
The first part of your answer didn't made me happy. :(
So... somewhere you wrote something about Poor Man's DVD. But I am more than that: I haven't yet a DVD Player and a 16:9 TV, but I want to learn. Few days ago I bought an DVD Writer dual, someday I will buy an DVD Player. For that the problem is not money (costs 79 euro) but I can't find in my country and I want one from Munchen, long distance for me. And maybe in few years I will have an 16:9 TV.

What I think about my problem with subtitles: now I have an 4:3 old TV and when I'll have an DVD player I want subtitles to stay on that black border. But what happen to an 16:9 TV? Are they displayed? For that I want two subtitles.
In D2S when I made an DVD from an avi and subtitle from srt the subtitle is on the black border because my source is 16:9 and I choose 16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3). With the default settings, D2S put my subtitle on the black border.
In Maestro if I import the resulting mpeg and adding stl subtitle made with Subtitle Workshop from srt, Maestro put the subtitle on the image. I know how to modify the resulting subtitle from Subtitle Workshop to be displayed in Maestro on the black border, but I want to make this directly from D2S, because I don't know so much about authoring and the DVD made by D2S is compliant.

So, I want to make DVD's for future. :rolleyes:

Anyway, since you're doing DVD subs (if I understood correctly), they are muxed with the movie and played where they belong. They adjust themself properly to 4:3 or 16:9 TVs. Remember height is the same in both worlds.

If you want to keep the best results, use anamorphic output. (DVD players support this.) So movie height will be properly resized in both worlds too.

Don't worry about the future. With the default settings you're covered. ;)

I forgot that, sorry: I want DVD selectable subtitles and output format is DVD.
In my first post I said that my source is an avi file. So, the subtitles will be displayed what I set in D2S in the Subtitle tab (for NTSC at 400). With this settings there are on black border. My avi resolution is 720x392.

1. One line from en1-1.sub with Ext. Y-pos = 400:
en100006.bmp 00:00:24,19 00:00:27,39 168 49 268 400
And from movie0.scp:
X1=276
Y1=400
X2=444
Y2=449
Subtitles are on the black border.

2. One line from en1-1.sub with Ext. Y-pos = 342:
en100006.bmp 00:00:24,19 00:00:27,39 168 49 268 342
And from movie0.scp:
X1=276
Y1=342
X2=444
Y2=390
Subtitles are on the movie image.

3. The same movie in mpeg format loaded in Maestro: from the .stl file:
//Position Control
$HorzAlign = Center
$VertAlign = Bottom
$XOffset = 0
$YOffset = 0
Subtitles are on the movie image and are like in example 2 from D2S. If I want to put the subtitles in Maestro on the black border I need to set $YOffset = (approx) 34

Also, I don't know why the script from Scenarist has two Y positions. :confused:

a. Defaults work.
b. No automatic way to do what you want.

The thing you searching for is automatized. You dont have to anything at all.
Subtitles are positioned downwards on DVDs. Script files are an other topic. So when you adjust the subtitles to appear just over the overscan area it will be played differently on 16:9 and 4:3. The aim exactly to create subtitles not full screaned.
