Hello,

I am totally new to the dvd burning thing, cause I just got my nec burner. I used to do gk divx rips, but now everything has changed!

I still have two movies as sets of vobs on my hard disk (made with dvd-decrypter), and I wonder what to do with them. They are bigger than 4,7 gb, so I somehow have to slightly compress them, and I want to keep the subtitles and audio streams. Which guide should I get into? Do I have to divx them? by the way, I don't care about dvd players; I just wanna watch them on my PC.

Thanks a lot!

Marcus

You can start by reading these guides (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm).

well, thanks, but there are A LOT of them...

I am just hoping to hear something like "use this program for that, and than that for that"... I mean, I know, I won't need an authoring tool, cause I don't have menues, nor extras. Just the movie...

again, thanks anyways

Well then use DVD Shrink (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Vobtools/dvdshrink317setup.zip) for all your needs. Their website: http://www.dvdshrink.org/.

@Marcus

You should read the doom9 info about DVD basics, and the DVD file structure.

For your specific desire, you could do the following things (in increasing order of making a proper DVD)

#1

If you have VOB files but no IFO files, you probably can already play these with PC dvd player software. I assume one (like PowerDVD) came with your drive. However, there would be some problems: for example, if you could turn on the subs, they probably would not be readable, the sub and audio streams would not be labled (as to which language they were), and the vob files may not reflect the intended order of play.

Of course, none of these things may be a problem for your case. If so, you could just do a data backup and pick the files to watch.

#2

However, if you want a video dvd disc, you need to create IFO files. Both IFOEdit and DVDFab can create these files for a set of VOBs. They don't work magic. You would have to fix the sub colors and lable the audio with IFOEdit (if you wanted that). If this file set of files (VOBs and IFOs) was too large to fit on a DVDR, you could shrink it a bit with DVDShrink. (In fact, the newest version of shrink may let you make IFOs. I has it's own authoring, but last I checked, you could not do this.)

#3

Use a DVD Author program to author a DVD. Depending on the program, you may need to seperate the audio/video/subs from the vob files. Some programs however do allow you to import VOBs (like DVDLab).
