MPlayer/Encoder compiling Errors

K, why I start such a thread? Cos I don't find the answers yet.

Here are some things I found out:

First at the install process of MinGW and MySys.

In this screenshot is written that I don't have a make.exe in the c:/MinGW/bin/ folder. I don't care about this, cos I can compile MEncoder and MPlayer.

Next thing what wondering me is this:

There it wrotes this:

It seems that it can't compile the manualfile of MEncoder. K, I don't need it, but I want to know if this is normal. Did this happend to You guys also?

Then the last thing:

There are two binaries in two different folders.

The first bins are located in c:/msys/1.0/local/bin
The other bins are located in c:/MPlayer/Mplayer (or the folder You stored Your Source codes)

The one in the /local/bin folder are smaler than the other in the /MPlayer folder.

In my case the have:

in /local/bin MEncoder.exe 3.68 MB; MPlayer.exe 3.74 MB

in /MPlayer MEncoder.exe 4.02 MB; MPlayer.exe 4.10 MB

Now my question is: Which bins should I use? Till now I used the bigger ones out of the MEncoder-folder.

I tried out the other bins. They worked also...

Any suggestions?

Try running strip on the larger EXE's and see how the resulting size compares.

As for the errors, last time I compiled it all went fine. But errors aren't exactly uncommon when dealing with CVS code.

I reinstall my whole compilingsystem. Maybe I forgot something...

"gcc.exe: unrecognized option `-rdynamic'" ... what is this? Is this needed?

Can't compile CVS 19.03.04. Could somebody elsw compile this CVS? Also 18.03.04 I can't...

The system is it. I'm updating now my compiling guide. Now you must use cygwin for doing this job. I compiled MEncoder without any errors!

Still compiles ok (with a little tweaking) for me using mingw. Can't get libdv to compile though. Also if I enable static XviD is disabled. Got vorbis and theora working ok though, plus updated faad. All completely useless for encoding MPEG1/2, but hey at least mplayer can decode ogm's.

Then send me Your tweaked MinGW Version. What I can see is with Cygwin it is faster and it compiles MEncoder 10% smaller.

Not really a tweaked version of MinGW, just had to make a few minor changes.

If Cygwin is faster then I would stick with it. As for size, if you add vorbis, theora, etc. then the size increases so it is kinda hard to compare. Also Cygwin requires a DLL where as mingw does not, so are you including that with the size?

Ok, hate to tell you, but -rdynamic is not supported any better by cygwin than it is by mingw, so your binraries do not have faad2 linked (try playing an aac/mp4 file) could explain the smaller size somewhat.

Doesn't seem to have directx either. Guess none of this really matters if you are only using it for mpeg1/2 encoding, infact there is probably a lot more that you could strip out.

Another weird thing; my build will accept a source from a network drive "\\computer name\c\file" where as yours will not.

Thanx for Your build. Can You tell me how exactly You build this build?
Networksupport is nice. If You want I can add it to the compiling guide and give You credit for that information.

What I found out about MinGW:

It still produces this Error with the manual. You can see that in the last screenshot of mingw in my guide. -rdynamic support is lost in both compiler. The last builds I created in cygwin. mingw couldn't compile the mencoder. So I think something is wrong with my mingw.

Can You give me the exact versionsnumbers of the files You use for mingw? Which msys, gcc etc. I'll also will thank You for that.

Here is my updated codecs.conf (http://rj-elektronik.de/avideo/files/codecs.conf). I added some new codes I use in my DRPEnc GUI. If you want include it into Your next build. It is located in the soure at /etc. So also Your build is then 100% usable with DRPEnc don't needing a extra codecs.conf file.

I replaced -rynamic with -Wl,--export-dynamic.

Edited the make file with the correct location to fix the manual error to.

Added an extra include to stream_file.c to sort out an error there.

Think that was about it. Well other than adding ogg, vorbis, theora, etc. libs. Like I said not exactly usefull for your purposes.

Msys v1.0.10, GCC 3.3.3

codecs.conf is no good for me. I uninstalled ffvfw since it was basically merged with ffdshow.

Need:

instead and then to put ffdshow.ax in a codecs sub directory as it is not found in program files/.... Could I guess also copy it to system32.

So what I did. I updated MinGW to 3.3.3 and MSYS to 1.0.10.
I entered my standard line

changed -rynamic to -Wl,--export-dynamic in confic.mak

entered make

...and got 1 Error:

You've disabled VIDIX. Although it would be better to PORT it instead.

K, cygwin compiles it on my machine. MinGW not. One thing I like on MinGW is that it search for the codecs.conf in the folder it is installed. Cygwin searches always in C:\cygwin\usr\local\etc\mplayer

I can change this with this cmd: --confdir=DIR use this prefix for installing configuration files

But this is then also a fix DIR. How can I do it like in MinGW?

Not sure, but I noticed that configure now detects whether you have fseeko so that error should at least be gone.

You'll see that I reported that even their own MinGW32 CVS last build crashes. And from what I've seen in the mailing list that's a bit ironic since they fixed Cigwin compiling recently :devil:

I'm having a bit of hassle here trying to compile mplayer in MinGW. It compiles fine with the default settings, but I'm doing this to enable the DXR3 output (as I have a HW+ card that I'd like to try mplayer with).

Problem is that when I try to compile either mplayer with the --enable-dxr3 switch, or the dxr3 driver itself (to get the library) it craps out because there's a couple of headers missing. They seem to be fairly key ones too (ioctl.h and select.h). Any idea where I could find these?

I'm still fairly clueless when it comes to compiling stuff, but manage to compile mplayer fine in OS X.

I am not sure about this, but most probably dxr3 will only work under unix/linux. If you want to just try it out once, get yourself a linux bootable distro like Knoppix, make a permanent home directory on one of your harddrives (fat32 partition) with about 75 MB and compile and install mplayer/mencoder into it using ./configure --prefix=/home/knoppix/mplayer
After adding /home/knoppix/mplayer/bin to your path
(e.g. edit /home/knoppix/.bashrd and add a last line
export PATH=/home/knoppix/mplayer/bin:$PATH )
you should be able to use the command mplayer in the shell in any directory. You may have to source the .bashrc to get the export working right away.
cd ~
. .bashrc
For speed improvement i recomend to copy the cd to another fat32 partition with boot parameter
knoppix tohd=/dev/hda5
if your d:\ is fat32
If you only have NTFS, you can copy a KNOPPIX iso image to root directory of a NTFS partition (while running Windows) and access that one at Knoppix boottime:
knoppix bootfrom=/dev/hda1/knoppix.iso
if you have copied the iso-Image to c:\
