Hello all. I am using DVDshrink 3.1.7.6. backing up DVDs is flawless, but i have one problem. when i try and backup a particular dvd, it keeps giving me an error:
DVD Shrink encountered an error & cannot continue.
Failed to read file "E:\"
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
I have no idea what this error means. what does it mean, and is there a way to overcome this problem??
I've also tried to use DVDdecrypter, and that also gives me errors too.
its weird, but i can play the dvd on my comp and on the TV dvd player perfect.
by the way, i'm pretty new to backing up DVDs.
Thanks in advance.

The error is probably a physical error on your DVD, try cleaning it, if that do not work, you probably is out of luck (see how important it is with a backup ;-) )

like was mentioned before, you will frequently get these errors if you have dirty or scratched disks...

your DVD must be clean and also of good quality.
The error "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" is due to Hw error in reading data from DVD.
The TV DVD player is able to play because have not the error check while reading; check that is present in the player of the PC.
If the error is very little your are unable to see it in your TV but the DVD reader of your PC don't allow to extract data that contain errors.
When the errors became great both player stop the operations.

First post here:) (Sorry for my bad English)
When I get such kind of error I use DVD Decrypter and toggle the "Ignore read errors" ON, and raise the value of "Software read errors retries" from 20 to 40 (These options are in the I/O tab in "tools-->settings" )
If you are lucky enough you may get able to rip it :)
BUT there is a chance of ending up with a corrupted file that works fine till the read error.
Use this if nothing else work.

ignore read errors on is sufficient, suggest to set read retry to 1 as it will take otherwise long time to rip as each sector which can not be read dvddecrypter will retry to retry as much as you have specified as it is unreadable this makes little sense. DVD decrypter will take its time as it stops at each read error for some seconds and then goes on to the next sector. but finally it will rip your DVD and if you have view log enable you can see how many sectors could not be read.If this is less then 100 then there is not so much to be worried about as it is only a few seconds of video, no more then a glitch when playback.
However if you load a set of DVD files ripped in this way in for instance Nero it will complain that DVD structure is corrupt, this because sector adress of vobu pointers no longer direct to correct adresses as some sectors were skipped during the ripping. To solve this just load the ifo file belonging to the vob with the sectors which could not be read and press vob extras, leave the first popup window unchanged and go through the other popup windows and check every box in this way in fact noting is stripped by ifoedit, but IFOedit will go through the vobs and correct the positions of the vobu pointers. After that don't forget to save ifo file, close ifoedit, open it again load same ifo file and press get vts sectors.
Done, now the files will be accepted by Nero and will play without a problem in your standalone of PC DVD player.
Did this several times and alwys work even if you cut out with an mpeg editor a part of the vob.
Note to make working with IFOedit easier suggest to use DVDdecrypter in file mode.
