I have a pcmcia card that will only play mpg (mpeg-1 or mpeg-2), vcd or dvd. I also have a bunch of avi files (most about 700mb) I'd like to convert to one of these formats. I'd prefer that the converted file is not too big (likely eliminating dvd) and that the conversion not use too much processor power.

Which format would you recommend? Would dvd2svcd be appropriate, or is there something else you recommend I try?

Are you referring to a video pcmcia card? That sounds very unlikely that any system would play mpg but not avi. Most likely, the issue is your system setting. You probably need to install codec(s) appropriate for your avi files, maybe DivX.

Anyway, there are many conversion programs discussed around here, like TMPGEnc or CCE. Be sure that they'll take all your processor power and tens of hours of time. As for the file size, it depends on your original material and desired output video quality.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to play AVI files with that card. Your best course of action appears to be encoding to MPEG-2. Search around, video encoding is widely covered here. There is no need to use dvd2svcd since it doesn't perform the actual encoding. Try one of the programs I mentioned earlier. Start experimenting with a short video clip half a minute long or so, because encoding process is very slow.

You can also use the new DRPEnc. It is a GUI for MEncoder. MEncoder is freeware. Ask me if You need help with my program.
